First things first; I love having blue hair. It’s a perfect way to make kids believe I’m a real life fairy and to keep the men I’d never be interested in in the first place far, far away from me.
But I can’t deny there are some downsides to having an outstanding hair color like mine. When I was 14, I rocked neon pink hair for a few weeks, until I realized it was not something I was ready to commit to at that point.
Things you might want to consider before going bright:
1. It’s a LOT of effort to maintain.
Unfortunately, bright hair dyes only come as semi-permanent. That means you’ll need a touch up every 2 or 3 weeks. Especially in the first months, bright colors will fade quickly.
At this point, there’s so many layers of blue in the bottom part of my hair that the colours remain very vivid. But the parts closer to my roots (that have been bleached more recently) often have faded after washing my hair only twice. Also: touching up roots means bleaching every 6 weeks or so, which is something you might want to get done professionally. There goes your money...
2. You’ll get noticed. All. The. Time.
Which might sound like fun (who wants to walk the world unnoticed!), but in reality, there are days you’d rather just not be seen. Back in my teens I lived in a small town where any head would turn whenever they spotted my pink hair. Living in a big city is very different, cause most people are used to anything and are minding their own business. Still - be prepared to stand out in the crowd. This gets especially uncomfortable running into exes you’re trying to avoid....
3. You have conversations about your hair all day.
This really bothered me in the beginning. I work in retail so make a lot of small talk with customers every day. But at some point you’re answering the same question for the fifth time today and it gets old really quickly. “Why blue?” Why not. Bonus points for every person that starts telling about the hair colors they ever used to rock.
4. Everything you own will get stained
Not just your pillows, towels and t-shirts. I’ve had blue hands for at least the first few months and still can’t wear any light nailpolish colors cause they’ll turn blue eventually. But also my shower tiles and sink look nowhere as white as they once used to be.
I bet my ex still feels awkward seeing the blue stained pillow next to his. Sorry!
5. There’s clothing you can’t wear anymore
Of course there are no actual rules about what you can or cannot wear, but there’s a lot of clothes I used to love that just don’t match with my hair at all. (Eventually, I found the solution in wearing only black. Ha.)
6. Your hair MIGHT get damaged
I’m emphasizing the “might” here, cause my hair is healthier than it ever was when I used to dye it in natural colors. For basically any bright hair color, you’ll have to bleach your hair at least a little, which is a very damaging process. But then again, I only bleach my roots every few months- in the colored hair dye there’s no actual chemicals that will do any damage to your hair. Back when I used to dye my hair black or brown I’d put chemicals in the whole length of my hair every few weeks... Ouch! So in fact, it might actually be a lot less damaging than lots of other colors that you’ll also have to touch up every few weeks.
Have you ever considered dyeing your hair in any crazy color? Is there any other things you experienced? I’d love to hear from you!
