Lancôme, one of my favourite luxury brands, recently released their newest addition to their Shaker Liquid Lipstick lineup – mattes! I am already a fan of their Juicy Shakers, so when these arrived I was extremely excited. I am a huge fan of matte lips, so I couldn’t wait to put these to the test to see how I would get along with them. The Lancôme Matte Shakers ($29) are said to be a high pigment liquid lipstick that sits comfortably on the lips without drying them out. Since matte lipsticks tend to be on the drying side, I was intrigued to see if these really did live up to the claims. Could it really be an all day matte lipstick that wasn’t drying?
The packaging is similar to the Juicy Shakers, just with a black cap so it’s easy to distinguish between the different finishes. I still love the martini inspired packaging as it gives you the option to apply a sheer layer or a more opaque layer just by how you shake it. Shaking it up and down with the cap up will give you a small amount of product while turning the tube upside down and shaking it will give you more product on the applicator. It’s very easy to build up the colour with just a few layers and I really like the colour selection as well. I hope they come out with more shades in the future!
I really enjoy the cushion applicator as it applies the lipstick really evenly onto the lips, but sadly it’s not great for creating a perfectly precise line. Since I like a more defined lip shape, I go in with a small lip brush and apply the product along the lip line first and fill in with the applicator. It is an extra step, which some people may not like, but I don’t really mind it. I can get a passable line with the applicator but it does take time and patience and is quicker to just use a lip brush in my opinion. I used just the applicator for the swatch pictures below.
The formula does feel really nice and light on the lips, but it doesn’t last as well as other matte lipsticks I’ve tried. It does tend to smudge quite easily, especially when drinking coffee. It isn’t a lip colour that you can just apply and not worry about, so re-applying after eating and drinking is a must. Is this a long-wearing matte lipstick that is no fuss? Not at all, but it certainly is more comfortable than other matte liquid lipsticks out there and are definitely worth a try!
