The largest climate zone in Nigeria is tropical savannah (Aw in Köppen's classification)

Nigeria is entirely in the tropics and therefore annual temperature variation is relatively small. However, humidity and rainfall vary a great deal between the summer and the winter months. Two air masses called Maritime Tropican and Continental Tropical take turns dominating the climate of Nigeria. In most of Nigera the Maritime Tropical air mass originating in the Atlantic dominates between March and November whereas the Continental Tropical air mass originating in the Atlantic ocean dominates between December and late February. The greatest difference between the two is in humidity and thus the amount of rainfall during each season.

The cause of the variation is that during the summer in the northern hemisphere the latitude receiving the greatest amount of solar insolation is the tropic of cancer at about 23 degrees. That latitude runs through the Sahara desert. The intense heat results in upward movement of air and a low pressure at ground level. That low pressure causes winds to blow from the Atlantic. The southernmost coastal regions in Nigeria have a tropical monsoon climate (Am) with distinct rainy and dry seasons with very large amounts of rain in the summer and the longest rainy season. The majority of Nigeria's territory has a tropical savannah climate with an arid season and a rainy season. In the winter, the opposite conditions prevail. There is ground level high pressure in the Sahara causing northerly winds to dominate. The very dry northerly wind is called the harmattan. It contains very little moisture and picks up dust as it moves south from the desert. The harmattan can cause the temperature to drop below 20 C in the central parts of the country or even colder in the extreme north.

The weather would probably feel weird if I went there as a Finn. I am definitely not used to weather like that

You mean during the rainy season? Sure, we are not used to high temperature and high humidity occurring at the same time. Under such conditions, there is no respite. If you are susceptible to the heat, it will beat you down without mercy. No amount of sweating will make you cooler if the air is calm. I remember an engineer I know who went to Indonesia to start a paper mill telling how his shirt got went in a few moments after stepping out of the plane at the airport. The air temperature was 37 C and the relative humidity was high as usual.

Yeah I am used to the rain but the heat would be way too much for me

That's right, due to the high temperature conditions in Nigeria it rains, I live in an area of Venezuela called Maracaibo, we have an average temperature of 34 degrees throughout the year, but we still have a dry season, where despite the high humidity we dont have rain.

That 34 degrees has got to be the daily maximum average temperature and not the 24 hour average.

Yes, the maximum temperature is 34ºc and minimum at dawn 27º

In Venezuela, we all make a joke. Look this:

A detailed description of Nigerian weather indeed...
To summarize, its hot and humid...Thanks for sharing...

I'll be moving to Thailand from rainy UK in a few months.. Going to get some of that hot humid weather.. A bit different than the rain we have here.. :)

Quite informative, well there are really a wide varieties of climates. The place I live in is also gifted with wide range of climates

Where do you live?

Nice bedtime facts, though I am reading them in the morning :p
Where do you live btw

Lahti, Finland. (See my profile.)

Oh! Ok
There's something wrong with steemit today.
Even this post took too long to load.

This is a perfect write up about the temperature and seasonal climate in Nigeria. Having lived in the North for more than 10 years and in the South for most part of my growing up.

The very dry northerly wind is called the harmattan.

That is something that is different in many of the european countries. The harmattan makes your skin to dry up and leaves your lips to crack. Many use lip balms during this time to prevent sore. Great write up Markku.

Thanks.

Reading a bedtime fact at morning time. That's what different latitudes do. Anyways nice a piece.

Different longitudes do that.
