A Minnesota Beekeeper in Spring

April 10, 2018

Yesterday, I did something that I had never done previously. I hived bees while there was still snow on the ground. We picked up the bees on Saturday evening. Hoped to hive them on Sunday, but the weather was still too cold. Yesterday the weather was a little bit warmer. So, we went forward. I hived two packages into the top bar hives, Hive Stripe and Hive White. The install was uneventful, minus 1 sting, my first for the season. I also direct released the queen from the queen cage in both hives for the first time. I had in the past let the bees free her. But, with the temperatures, We need to have them cluster up and protect her. Now, the weather hopefully will warm up and the queens can get going on brood rearing. Today, I will hive the Langstroth hive.
