Today presents a beer can that reminds me of something less favorable, and a road of research that leads to a previous entry being rescued from the fog of Egerer.
Memminger Gold Märzen
I can’t help but look at this can and think it bears resemblance to a big American brewer’s product: Miller Lite. I’ve never tasted that poor excuse for beer, but I’m sure this German can has more to offer on the inside. Not wanting to judge a beer by its can, I crack her open and pour.
Light gold in color, this beer’s slightly cloudy, which can be expected of a Märzen. A thin head exhibits medium retention. The flavor profile from the start is bright and easy drinking, made with gentle tastes of fresh wheat, baker’s yeast, and mild sweetness.
Subtle hops provide tangerine notes, which is a pleasant addition. I’m happy there aren’t any off flavors creeping through the finish. This Märzen stands up as a nice, refreshing summer quencher, offering some soft flavors with a feathery mouthfeel. This is a good beer, but since I’m currently dealing with 20°F temperatures I’ll cross my fingers that tomorrow gives us a nice winter beer.
Memminger Brauerei
The Memminger Brauerei was discussed on December 6th when I sampled a Doppelbock from their Kartäuser line of brews. Interestingly enough, today I noticed they have an Alpkönig line of brews.
On December 7th the featured beer was Alpenkönig Gold Märzen. I wasn’t able to discover the original brewer at that time and concluded it was a possible rebranding of Egerer’s Gold Märzen. But, seeing Memminger’s Alpkönig beers is a strong indicator that this is December 7th’s beer.
An interesting piece of German history, and human rights in general, occurred in Memmingen the year of 1525. A document known as The Twelve Articles: The Just and Fundamental Articles of All the Peasantry and Tenants of Spiritual and Temporal Powers by Whom They Think Themselves Oppressed (how’s that for a title) was written to appeal for proper peasants’ rights. Asking for rights to hunt game animals, harvest fire wood from non-private lands, earn fare wages, pay a fare rent, remove corrupt preachers and elect new ones: these are just a few of the demands listed.
The Twelve Articles of the Swabian peasants is considered the first human rights document in the world and over 25,000 copies spread across Germany over the two months following its creation.

Miller Lite is more light yellow, like someone peed in a can. Hmm... that could be why it tastes so bad.
This one sounds very good!

Yeah, it was a pretty good beer, I suppose the gold pinstripes and blue letters on the can just made me think of tacky American beer. Like @negativer has pointed out a few times in this series though, these can designs need some help all over.
