I'd never done a pre-packed kit before. I actually learned brewing all-grain with a buddy that has a full setup and vividly remember my first brew as well. I did custom extract/grain brews at home after that, since the local brew store sells a few malt extracts to save you some work.
Lately, with the current age of my kids and this busy stage of life, I haven't been doing any home brewing. I actually started a super basic mead recipe at the start of this month just for to have something fermenting to look forward to. I'm looking forward to when it's ready for bottling, which will probably be the beginning of February.
Let us know how it turns out, this mead of yours. If I could find a place to get honey cheap...I'd make a mead too :)
