A SWEET & FRUITY KRAFT MILD
I was having one of those days where you start off with great intentions, but basically get absolutely sweet FA done, so there was only one thing for it....an afternoon trip to my favourite real ale pub, the wonderful Rat and Ratchet, located in the centre of the universe in Huddersfield, where I turned up an unexpected little beauty called Allsorts of Naughtiness from the Imperial Brewery in Mexborough, South Yorkshire.
Now, I'm somewhat fond of a nice dark mild at the best of times, and this one immediately caught my eye. Normally, I get a taster of just about every one of the 12 traditional ales the Rat serves, but this time, I went straight for it, ostensibly because it looked like I was going to get a combination of a beer and a bag of Liquorice Allsorts. Brilliant.
It's a deep ruby mild, liquorice-y (is that a real word? Oh well it is now) on the nose, with a lovely creamy body. And the taste. Oh my God. It's hard to find the liquorice in the flavour, but it's got this wonderful fruit-of-the-hedge sharpness and slight blackcurrant sourness. Somewhat refreshing, I'll say.

MEXBOROUGH'S GREATEST EXPORT
I used to have an ex girlfriend in Mexborough, so I know the town well, and for the most part I've always described it as a bit of an armpit of the universe, but by 'eck do they know how to make a good pint down there. People from Mexborough are often described as "salt of the earth common-folk", and they are fiercely loyal to their town and will never be heard saying a bad word about it. Which is nice.
Now I'm a Yorkshireman myself, so probably a little bit biased towards a good Northern beer, but frankly this is a "reet good pint".
And at only 3.8% ABV I could actually get another half in before I went home too! Perhaps a little trip to the brewery sometime fellow Steemians?
