How Did I Do? Beer Run/Haul Review #6

in beer •  7 years ago  (edited)

A couple of months ago I made a post about the beer runs I had made over the course of a couple months, see it here: https://steemit.com/beer/@bigskycustoms/beer-runs
I thought it would be fun to go back and see how i liked the beers I picked up in the reviews. I will just do one or two of the runs per post but will be rating them all on how well I did on picking good beers. As a criteria I am using the Untappd rating system since that is how I rate all my beers. So using that system, anything between 0.00 and 2.00 I would consider to be a bad to mediocre beer, those between 2.00 and 3.50 would be considered fair to midling beers, decent on most occasions, beers from 3.50 to 4.25 would be very good beers and those from 4.25 to 5.00 are to be considered the best, very good beers to my palate.

Here are a couple of beer hauls from the past month, the first I picked up some beers at my local beer and wine store, Vintage Sellers. I hadn't been in there for a couple months so it was nice to see some new beers to try.

Here are the ratings for each beer and the overall average to see how I did on this run:

  • Moylan's Brewing - Celts Golden Ale: 3.50
  • Moylan's Brewing - Scotch Ale: 4.25
  • Moylan's Brewing - 2017 Barrel Aged Ryan O'Sullivan Imperial Stout: 4.25
  • Samuel Smith - Taddy Porter: 4.00
  • Spator - Opimator Dobbel Bock: 3.50
  • Lagunitas Brewing - Little Sumpin Sumpin: 3.50
  • Founders Brewing - KBS 2017: 5.00
  • Sockeye Brewing Dark Sour Huggy Bear: 2.50

Overall Average Rating: 3.81

This was a larger group of 8 beers, so an overall of 3.81 isn't too bad. Buoyed up by the massive 5.0 rating of the KBS, an awesome bourbon barrel aged beer, and brought down by the less than tasty Dark Sour from Sockeye at 2.50, the rest of the beers were in the good to really good range. A pretty large sampling from Moylan's, all 22 oz beers and all good, especially the two dark beers, a BBA Imperial Stout and a Scotch ale, not hard to see top ratings for those two. The lighter beers, all in the 3.50 range, were solid beers, each with their own attributes. You can look at and see my reviews of most of these beers to see details on how they were. The Dark Sour, I really didn't care for, even for a sour, which is a beer type that is pretty low on my beer favorite scale. What can I say about the Foundes KBS though, just a really really good beer. I don't hand out many 5.0 ratings and this is one of those beers. Founders in general produces really good beers.

The second beer haul I am talking about today was consisted of gifts from my buddy Bob Sainsbury who gave me all 3 of the 4 ( three in one picture and one in another), and my cousin Fred who gave me a beer he picked up in California. One true Mexican craft beer, another mass produced Mexican beer, an imperial Porter from California and a Belgium beer.

Here are the ratings for each beer and the overall average to see how I did on this run:

  • Baja Brewing - Avena Baja Stout: 4.25
  • Pizza Port Brewing - Bacon and Eggs Imperial Coffee Porter: 4.50
  • Carta Blanca: 3.00
  • Grimberger - Blonde: 2.50

Overall Average Rating: 3.56

As you can see, the smaller sample size lowered the rating to just above 3.50 based on two less than stellar beers, even with high ratings for the other two. The Pizza Port Imperial Coffee Porter that my cousin picked up for me at the brewery in California, was a very good coffee porter, and it justified the high 4.50 rating. Also, Bob picked up the Avena Stout from the brewery in Mexico and it was a very good stout, actually kind of unexpected from south of the border, with a 4.25. And actually, while I only gave the Carta Blanca a 3.0 it was a decent beer, more like what I would expect Mexican beers to be like. The Grimberger was a Belgium ale, a blonde and with nearly all Belgium beers, I didn't really like it so it got the lowest rating.

The two beer runs reviewed today were both in the middle echelon of runs, with one stellar beer and a second top rung beer. If there was ever a beer I would recommend, it would be KBS, highly recommended. Thought this was kind of fun and I will continue to do these beer run rating posts until I run out of the beer runs. Hope you enjoyed this and I can give details on any specific beers you might be interested in knowing more about. A lot of these I have already posted beer reviews on Steemit so I can find a link for you if interested. Cheers and good beer hunting!!!!!

Man, I gotta try me that KBS. Never seen it in the north unfortunately. One day I'll get my hands on one though!
Personally, I'm a fan of the Little sumpin sumpin. It's hard to describe what exactly it is. Maybe it had a little too much hop for your liking though.
And we differ in our views on Belgians. Not the biggest fan of blondes when it comes to beers from the area, but I love most of what they have to offer.
Hope your next run is just as good. Seems like all in all these were pretty decent!

So no FOunders up in Canada? that sucks, you aren't too far north that maybe you could find some in Washington and bring it home, it is really good. I didn't hate the LSS, it wasn't bad, 3.5 is a decent rating, kind of the baseline for beers I like. Not sure what the taste in Belgiums is that I don't like but it is there and I don't like it.

I have a friend who's the same way. The yeasts they use or something. He can't stomach any of them. No Founders that I've seen here in BC anyways. I think each province has different laws on import and such, so might be able to find it in another. Or a distributer here needs to bring it in.

I saw the Oak and Vine in Calgary got in the KBS, maybe you can find it there.
