Beer Tasting - Witbier (Hoegaarden vs Blue Moon)

in beer •  7 years ago  (edited)

Beer clash today. Both are popular, both are witbier. The USA vs Belgium. Only you can decide, but let’s see this review.

If we look at the obvious, RateBeer score, the answer is clear. But let’s give them a chance before prejudice kicks in.

What is witbier?

[These] beers [...] are generally pale and opaque with a crisp wheat character and citric refreshment of orange peel and coriander. Ingredients sometimes include oats for smoothness, and other spices such as grains of paradise.

Hoegaarden by Brouwerij Hoegaarden (AB-InBev)

StyleWitbier
CountryHoegaarden, Belgium
Alcohol4.9%
--------------
AppearanceHazy straw color. Nice fluffy head.Clear simple label.
AromaHeavy wheat yeasts. Banana. Distant coriander. Wouldn’t say citrus if I didn’t read it in the description.
TasteVery gentle medium sweet. Distant zesty orange.
PalateWatery. Tingly feel. Mellow aftertaste.
--------------
OverallRefreshing drink, great for lazy summer days in the sun. Small bottle makes it disappear in an instant. Not my style really but a very good wheat!
Score (subjective, personal)16/20

Price: 10 kuna (1.60$) for 0.33 l. Bottle. Supermarket. Budget.

Blue Moon Belgian White Ale by Blue Moon Brewing Company (MillerCoors)

StyleWitbier
CountryDenver, Colorado USA
Alcohol5.4%
--------------
AppearancePale gold, almost clear. Lackluster head. I’ve always wondered what’s with the moon iconography on the label.
AromaPronounced coriander. Definitely orange zest. Almost like a multivitamin fruit juice.
TasteEarthy bittersweet. You feel… coriander coming through? Something pungent in the taste.
PalateSlick and smooth. Leaves a strange chemical aftertaste. You are left wondering is this how it should feel.
--------------
OverallA good work. Indeed has all the characteristic of a witbier but somehow incomplete.
Score (subjective, personal)14/20

Price: 10 kuna (1.60$) for 0.33 l. Bottle. Supermarket. Budget.

Verdict

I’m almost sad to say that popular opinion wins out this time. I’d go with Belgium here but the Moon is a decent beer too. You won’t go wrong on both counts.

Is the glass just for the photo shoot? Or do you normally drink them that way? I love a nice chilled glass, but when no one's looking, I choose the shortest route to my belly!

I do tend to use glasses, unless it is a macro lager or some such. This was the only thing I could find. I'm not at home.

Thanks for this post - I do love both but in a pinch probably would grab the Hoegaarden, while the alcohol content may be slightly lower the flavor is more to my preferred taste - I do love Belgian beer in general, and Belgian girls are some of my favorites as well... I love the time I spent in Belgium when travelling as a younger man (before kids). Thanks for the the cool refreshing post, and great analysis, keep it up.. upvoted, following and resteemed. peace

You should really taste nigerian beer, @buzzbeergeek .awesome

Interesting analysis. I just posted about a less popular craft Witbier from Nantucket!

Nice post. As someone living in Amsterdam and appreciating Belgian beers it is good to see you use a good glass!

It would be interesting to test some beer from my country :D

I love Blue Moon. I don't know if it should be directly compared to an European wheat beer, but I think Blue Moon is the best wheat beer in US. Great article! Following you.

Spot on with the judging here. Hoegarden is nice and natural tasting and blue moon just had a funny tang. It also gives you a good awful hangover the next day if you have a few!!

@buzzbeergeek got you a $1.72 @minnowbooster upgoat, nice!

Wit off! hehe

Hoegaarden wit is one of my favourites; the bottle you had has a new label design; I'm curious if they changed anything in the recipe as well. I've got one of these bottles 2 days ago, haven't had the chance to find out yet.

Cheers

Nice... sorry, short comment. I just recover from stomach ache at this morning :)

The best part of your posts is the photo shoot, they make me tempting to try them as soon as possible. Thanx for such a detailed post.

Oh God))) This is a beer paradise?)))) I adore Hoegaarden))) Thanks for such a cool post))) I follow you, so as not to miss)))

I've tried both of them, but never face to face. I remember, that I enjoyed the Blue Moon a lot, but I go for a nice, cold Hoegaarden very often! Maybe prefer it! Always very refreshing.
Cheers!
