Beer Review [6]: Atoning For My Sins - with Pure Sin Schwarzbier by Deluxe Brewing Company

in beer •  7 years ago  (edited)

How shall I atone for my mistakes? Step 1 is to acknowledge them. Step 2 is penance. Step 3 is recompense. Can I handle all these steps? Come into my post to find out!

Step 1: Acknowledge My Sins

x sin 1.jpg
My sins have loomed larger and larger, over the horizon, these last few days. Literally and figuratively.

Beer Review GIF-downsized_large.gif
Like Edgar Allen Poe's Tell-tale Heart, my sins throb, thrum, and thrump. Demanding my attention. Finally, it takes more effort to ignore them, than to acknowledge them. So here goes!

x sin 5.jpg
My yard is a mess. The grass is long.

x sin 4.jpg
There are so many weeds. I eat them, just like I eat my sins. But I can't keep up.

Even more importantly, I completely forgot about 2 posts I made here on Steemit that had mini-contests in them! I didn't decide on any winners or pay out the prizes I promised! That's terrible!

First, I reviewed a Gluten-free Beer made with lentils - over a month ago. In that post, I said:

Tell me a joke about beans! I'll pick my favorite one submitted during this post's payout period. And the winner will get a $1 SBD prize.

And then I wrote about foraging in Oregon's coastal forest. It was only part 1, but I never got to part 2. In that post, I said:

What side of a tree does moss grow on the best? Put your answer in the comments below. I'll draw a winner from the correct answers, at the end of the payout period for this post, for a $1 SBD prize.

Step 2: Penance

Now I need to do an act of devotion performed to show sorrow or repentance. I'll devote attention to the details of Pure Sin. A craft lager brewed by Deluxe Brewing Company in Albany, Oregon. That's pretty local, only 45 miles away from where I live. Pure Sin is a Schwarzbier - the only one I have ever seen.

x sin 3.jpg

As a style of beer, a Schwarzbier is a dark lager with low hop flavors and bitterness. Instead, they taste of roasted malt without much sweetness, either. Just a smooth, creamy, rich character, like a good dark chocolate. Schwarzbiers are supposed to pour with a thick head and fast-rising bubbles. They are like a stout, but made as a lager instead of an ale.

On the bottle, Deluxe Brewing describes Pure Sin as:

a medium-bodied, malt-accented dark brew with a rich-creamy head. In spite of its dark color, it comes across as a soft and elegant brew that is rich, mild, and balanced.

x sin 2.jpg
I like how the shading gives the label a 3-D look. My sins are multi-dimensional, too.

x sin 6.jpg
This is a dark beer, alright. And look at how that head sits there, so thick. With only a 4.7% ABV, it's possible to do a lot of penance, if you get my drift.

Step 3: Recompense

Now I must make amends. I've sent the 1 SBD prizes to the winners -- @ddschteinn for his original bean joke that got a laugh from another commenter, too. And to @fishyculture for knowing where moss likes to grow on a tree. I'll post the answer in my next forest walk post, coming soon!

I've sent everyone who participated a 1 SBD recompense as well. To all those who wondered what happened with the contests, I'm sorry. To anyone waiting for me to mow my grass or pick all my weeds, I offer this condolence: "At least I am quiet and I am not selling my land to developers."

Check your wallets: @xabi, @tangmo, @erikaflynn, @melinda010100, @prydefoltz, @fishyculture, @enternamehere, @ddschteinn, and @appone!

Step 4: Moving Forward

I think it's too presumptuous to say step 4 is redemption. The best I can do is simply go forth, into the future. And try to do my best. And make new sins, I'm sure. It's pretty much guaranteed!

x sin 7.jpg
Yes, this cheap store-bought pizza is a sin. At least I topped it with some homemade pickled hop shoots. I have a YouTube video that shows how to pickle hop shoots. It doesn't take any cooking, and only uses 4 ingredients - and 1 of those is beer! And that is a big bottle of Pure Sin! But it goes down so easy -- maybe too easy! I could get to liking Pure Sin a little too much!

What Do You Think?

  • Have you ever had Pure Sin?
  • Have you ever had a Schwarzbier?
  • Have you ever eaten hop shoots?
  • Have you committed any Steemit sins?

Maybe you wouldn’thave forget if you weren’t drinking Pure Sin. Payouts would have got done, the grass would be mowed and you’d have extra cash for a decent pizza. 🤔 hahaha

You have a lot of valid points! ; )

Alas I remain innocent of all charges. I forgot about the contest too; so you are not alone. Love the idea of pickling with beer. I have made some brine pickles but never with beer. I will have to try that:)

Always happy to see you have posted, HH:)

Maybe Steemit gives us all a short memory. And time flies so fast here. Those pickled hop shoots are so easy to make. I've used different beers in the mix and it does make them taste a little different. But always good! I save the liquid, once I've eaten all the hop shoots, and put other things in it, just one more time, for a quick refrigerator pickle. Like yucca flower centers and cats tongue mushrooms. It's an easy way to handful of a wild harvest. Always happy to see your comments, too, @prydefoltz!

:)

I'm reading this post thanks to @qurator's daily feature and I just wanted to say thank you for the laugh. My worn out brain is forgetting everything lately--the most recent being my Parent-Teacher conference yesterday--so it's soothing to read that somebody else out there was forgetful, too😜

To answer your questions: No, No, No, and maybe? Does falling way behind on responding to comments, and then giving up, count?

Falling behind in comments and giving up isn't a sin -- it's standard practice here on Steemit, lol. Thanks for the heads-up about the @qurator feature. I missed that somehow and will have to go take a look.

Oh don't sweat it HH, why here is an Indulgence - free of charge! You just go ahead now and have as many Pure Sins as you like. I got you covered ;)

Wow that is about as black as a black hole! Yikes!!

haha -- I need all the help I can get! That Pure Sin Schwarzbier is black as sin, for sure. I even had a flashlight behind that glass, trying to shine through. But it was tasty! :D

Lol! All is forgiven... THANKS!

You're welcome. It's nice to have a beer that works as a Hallmark card, too, with a sentiment that works for many occasions. I better get a 6-pack, lol.

Oh boy.. I am still before my dinner here and all I see today are food posts!
I just drooled and a pasta with shrimps and now you are showing me pizza and a lovely dark beer (no, I never had it. Never even seen it).

Must eat something...

I hope you got something to eat by now, lol. Food posts can be dangerous. That was good pizza, though, with those pickled hop shoots. I'll be looking for more of the Schwarzbier style beers, now. This one was good.

Haha this is great. Looks like a nice beer to makeup for your wrongdoings. I like the foamy head.

I probably ought to stock up on these, lol. I'm going to be looking for more of this style of beer, though, for sure. I'd never seen a Schwarzbier before. That foam was good. It would be good in a beer meringue frosting - it's almost thick enough to use, just by itself, lol.

First of all, thanks so much for your special gift of 1 SBD for me. It was really a big surprise! In the meantime, I much appreciate it! I’m looking forward to your answer with much interest.

Interesting beer review! Its bottle is very big and its color is very dark…. I like the way you took the photos; with the bright green grass and beautiful yellow flowers as background. Great shot!

The pizza with topping of your homemade pickled hop shoots looks yummy! Well done! ;)

You're welcome, @tangmo. I think this beer is the darkest one I have ever seen. In that photo before the pizza, I have a flashlight shining through the glass, and there's hardly anything getting through at all! Those yellow flowers are the wild field mustard that I used as a topping for my Wild Myrtle Lentils: Short-Stacks of Deliciousness in the Steemit Iron Chef contest. So at least those weeds are useful!

This beer is the darkest one I have ever seen, too!

Yes, this yellow weeds are useful and really beautiful. I love them. ;)

You may have that wild field mustard in your area, too. It is a weed almost everywhere around the world.

Maybe, there are some wild field mustard somewhere in Thailand..... But, I haven't seen them before.... They are very beautiful indeed. ;)

I’ve never seen this Pure Sin beer before, Haphazard. It looks healthy, as you mentioned, much like stout. My mother used to give my sister stout once in awhile to help her gain weight.

Hi, @redheadpei! Good to see you here! That's so interesting about your mom and sister. I wonder what sort of stout she used -- maybe a Milk Stout?? I better go look for a local Milk Stout to try! :D

Nice to contact you. Quite a few of the TSU gang on Steemit!
Knowing my Irish mother, she would buy the Guinness Stout- brewed in Dublin and has a harp on the bottle. ☘️ 😊

It is nice to see all the folks from TSU here on Steemit. I have a harder time connecting with everyone, though. Good Guiness! :D

#tsufamily I’ve connected with here: @trudeehunter, @keithboone, @shaunf, @yvonneinoregon, @icybc, Liz Flores at @deadgrlsuppastar, @brumest, @ackhoo, @txatxy, @melinda010100..to name a few.

Schwarzbier means “black beer” in German. It is a medium-bodied, malt-accented dark brew with a rich-creamy head. In spite of its dark color, it comes across as a soft and elegant brew that is rich, mild, and surprisingly balanced. Meant to be sinful!

I see that you copied this right off the Deluxe Brewing website.

if a beer’s malt bill includes very deeply roasted and caramelized grains, a darker colored brew will result. The color of a beer alone does not indicate how bitter or alcoholic that beer is, period.
But your review was awesome, you are great beer analyzer !

I see that you just copied this off the Eater.com website.

Sir sorry for that, i just did it just to throw some information about that. You didn't liked that. For that reason i'm sorry sir.

Thanks for letting me know. If you comment to me like a real person, person to person, that is much nicer. I could not tell if you were a programmed response, just scraping text from other people, off of websites. It's better that we all get to know you, not your skill at copying from a website! : )

Poured from tap to glass. Brown hue with fizzy tan head that dissipated to a ring. Aroma toffee, coffee, slight sulphur. Mouthfeel is refreshing with a light body and soft carbonation. Taste is dry with a clean finish. Overall this is a decent brew. after reading your review it feels me so good , i liked the way you gave explanation and described about it's every single fact.Thank You so much @haphazard-hstead for this amazing review.

So what is the problem with this ?

Please comment to me like a person, not copying someone else's writing. I like to get to know people. People connecting with people, as real people, is what makes Steemit such a nice place.

Ok i will and i did already, I understood my mistakes. Hope you will never see this wrong thing from me again. From now i will always comment you from my real feelings. Sorry for my mistakes and Thanks for your advice. You are really a good person.

I'll look forward to chatting with you again, @eliyanafox!

32 oz growlette purchased from Growl Movement in Salem. $7. Poured into my Guinness glass. Dark, very dark brown with a nice sized bubbly tan head. Creamy malty aromas with a touch of coffee and chocolate. Smooth malty flavours..some chocolate but not dark,,a tiny bit of burnt oat. Nice smooth mouth feel maybe too smooth. An OK dark lager.
But i enjoyed your review it was cool.

Did you just copy this off the RateBeer website?
