Spaten Optimator Doppelbock: An Amateurish Beer Review

in beer •  5 years ago

Game night means snacks and beer, assuming I bring my own snacks and beer. At the moment, the gang is watching a stand-up comedy video, and I am preparing to try a proper German beer.

I have no idea what to expect.

The hops and malt produce a very different scent than one gets from any American beer, Doppelbock style or otherwise. Color is a deep brown. Head is creamy. Sorry about the crappy photography. It is what it is.

Taste is very sweet with caramel and floral notes, if I may wax poetic and fake my way through beer jargon. The bottle says it is 7.6% ABV, which is surprisingly strong.

I was a little leery of the green bottle. It's better than clear glass to prevent geting skunked, but not as good as brown. One significant benefit to the much-maligned can is that it prevents all light from reaching the beer inside.

Huh. I wonder where that went while I have been writing this. So strange. I blame aliens.

Shit. I guess I'd better open another. What a shame. On to snacks and games and comedy videos! I would suggest giving this a try if you find it somewhere. It's very different from any other beer I have tried, but not in a bad way. This was interesting. It's still freakin' cold and I still hurt, but another of these should address that nicely.

I grew up partly in a hotel next to Yosemite. My grandmother was part owner and I spent MANY hours there. They stocked a very nice selection of foreign beers since the tour buses were their mainstay income in the 80s and 90s. One of my favorite memories was stealing bottles of Spaten and holing up in my cousin's room and downing it before going back to the bar and listening to the heap of Germans, or Japanese, or other nationalities.

Damned good times.

Beer, healer of all :0)

I always blame aliens, you can't go wrong with that one
