Beer of the Day - Horatio

in beeroftheday •  7 years ago

Horatio

Single malt UK Maris Otter, single hop NZ Nelson Sauvin beer named after Horatio, Admiral Lord Nelson, victor of the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. Nelson had one eye one arm so a single malt and hop beer seemed appropriate. NZ Nelson Sauvin comes from the same area of New Zealand as the great NZ Sauvignon Blanc wines and the hop has a similar minerally, gooseberry taste. We accentuated this with liberal Burtonization of our brewing water, and added hops primarily for flavor rather than bitterness or aroma, partway through our whirlpool stage. The light color continues the fine white wine parallel. We think this is an IPA for grown-ups - hempweed obsessives might be disappointed but theres an awful lot of West Coast IPA to which theyre entirely, eternally welcome.

Our Thoughts

Today we have "Horatio" which is a American-Style India Pale Ale that could be compared to a Strong IPA. With a ABV of 6.6 this is a beer that will get you pie-eyed in no time. This beer is meant for the drinker with a distinguished taste for bitterness.

American-Style India Pale Ale

American-style India pale ales are perceived to have medium-high to intense hop bitterness, flavor and aroma with medium-high alcohol content. The style is further characterized by floral, fruity, citrus-like, piney, resinous, or sulfur-like American-variety hop character. Note that one or more of these American-variety hop characters is the perceived end, but the hop characters may be a result of the skillful use of hops of other national origins. The use of water with high mineral content results in a crisp, dry beer. This pale gold to deep copper-colored ale has a full, flowery hop aroma and may have a strong hop flavor in addition to the perception of hop bitterness. India pale ales possess medium maltiness which contributes to a medium body. Fruity-ester flavors and aromas are moderate to very strong. Diacetyl can be absent or may be perceived at very low levels. Chill andor hop haze is allowable at cold temperatures. English and citrus-like American hops are considered enough of a distinction justifying separate American-style IPA and English-style IPA categories or subcategories. Hops of other origins may be used for bitterness or approximating traditional American or English character. See English-style India Pale Ale

What does ABV/IBU mean?

ABV
ABV stands for Alcohol By Volume and is listed as a percentage and lets you know how much of your beer is alcohol and how much is other stuff.

IBU
