Now, be kind, as I am not a huge beer drinker and certainly not very knowledgeable about them either. My husband started trying different IPA style beers and I have to say, I am becoming a fan. I do tend to like things that are a little on the strong, bitter side and these different beers are really hitting the spot. Today, for #beersaturday I would like to share a bit about the three that we have tried recently. I did get the info on each from the brewing company's website.
ELIOT NESS® AMBER LAGER
Admittedly, it’s a bit of a paradox to name our Amber Lager for history’s most famous agent of prohibition. But it’s a smooth, malty (and dare we say, arresting?) paradox.
FLAVOR
Almost untouchably smooth--armed with lightly toasted malts and noble hops.
- ABV - 6.1%
- IBU - 27
PAIRS WITH - Smoked meats, hearty bread, and a classy fedora.
Behind the Name:
Need more evidence of our Eliot Ness connection? We’ve placed a shorthand tribute to co-owners Pat and Dan Conway’s mother (Ness’ stenographer) in our label artwork. Here’s another clue: visit our brewpub to investigate Ness’ legendary bullet hole above our bar. Case closed.
About the Style:
Brewer Anton Dreher perfected his Vienna-style Lager around 1841. Our take includes the style-appropriate toasty and complex but clean malt profile, and minimal floral, spicy hop aromas and flavors. Slightly sweet, bready maltiness is the key characteristic of this easy-drinking, amber-colored Lager.
WORLD BEER CHAMPIONSHIPS
12-Time Award Winner Since 1995 (Gold, Silver)
COMMODORE PERRY® IPA
What’s this? A British-style IPA named after the man who defeated His Majesty’s Royal Navy in the War of 1812? Consider this a bold, hoppy (and mildly ironic) plunder of war.
FLAVOR
Dry and well-hopped, with an arsenal of caramel malt flavors befitting the “Hero of Lake Erie.”
- ABV - 7.7%
- IBU - 70
PAIRS WITH - Spicy foods, carrot cake, and glorious sideburns.
Behind the Name:
Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry: The “Hero of Lake Erie” and a preeminent lamb chop sideburns aficionado. Within our label’s artwork are nods to his conquest in the Battle of Lake Erie which took place near Ohio’s South Bass Island, including strips of sailcloth and our cheeky take on his legendary battle flag: “Don’t Give Up the Sip!”
About the Style:
English IPAs likely originated as Pale Ales prepared for shipment to India in the late 1700s and early 1800s. Today’s English IPAs may have less in common with those original brews, but they tend to feature high hop flavor and bitterness balanced by a bready, biscuit-like malt body. Unlike the American IPA, English IPAs may be slightly dryer and more balanced.
WORLD BEER CHAMPIONSHIPS
3-Time Medal Winner Since 1996 (Gold)
GREAT AMERICAN BEER FESTIVAL AWARDS
1992
DORTMUNDER GOLD® LAGER
Yes, it's known for winning medals worldwide. But locally, it's known as "Dort," our flagship lager that humbly maintains its smooth, balanced (and charmingly unpretentious) ways.
FLAVOR
A smooth, award-winning (and deceptively unassuming) balance of sweet malt and dry hop flavors.
- ABV - 5.8%
- IBU - 30
PAIRS WITH
Salads, fish, chicken, and pretty much any social function.
Behind the Name:
Dortmunder Gold earned its name after winning its 1st gold medal at the Great American Beer Festival in 1992. Previously it was called “TheHeisman” after John Heisman, whose childhood home is located near our brewery. Co-formulated with Master Brewer Thaine Johnson (whose handwritten notes appear in our label art), Dort continues to win over judges and beer enthusiasts around the world.
About the Style:
During the mid-19th century, seven breweries within the city of Dortmund, Germany began brewing beers in the same manner, resulting in what we now know as the “Dortmunder” style. With the flavor and sweetness of a German-style Helles Lager and the bitterness of a German-style Pils, this accessible style is known for its balance.
