belgian monuments: The Lion of Waterloo

in belgium •  2 years ago

I recently visited the Lion of Waterloo. It is a large monument atop a hill that overlooks a beautiful valley and the French border. The monument commemorates the Battle of Waterloo and is a symbol of Belgian independence. It was built in 1820 and is made of limestone and brick. The monument itself is quite impressive, standing at 35 meters tall, and you can get an incredible view from the top of the hill. You can also venture inside the monument, where there is an exhibition about the battle and its importance for Belgian history. It was fascinating to learn about the history of the battle, and it was quite moving to see the many names inscribed on the walls of the monument. The monument is a great way to spend an afternoon and to learn about Belgian history. It is well-maintained and has a lot of interesting information to offer. I would highly recommend visiting this incredible monument to anyone who finds themselves in Belgium.
