I'm so fascinated (and depressed) by this mentality, and yet it seems to be the single most consistent attribute of Progressives from their ideological inception.
The thought process is so pernicious.
Musk is echoing the founding fathers and what libertarians have said forever - separation of powers is good, both across institutional structures like the three branches of government, AND - especially given the nature of an electoral system that inevitably produces a maximum of two major parties - across partisan lines. But this seems totally insane to Progressives, because they see their ideology as unassailably correct in such a way as to not really be able to conceptualize disagreements.
What they want is "progress". Thus, anyone who wants to stop them is (inherently) against progress.
The whole thing is deeply arrogant. It assumes that they have some kind of Nostradamus-like power to peer into the future and see what entire societies are supposed to be. It's also wrapped in economic ignorance like believing that price gouging laws will lower gas prices instead of creating shortages or that massive government spending will "stimulate" the economy instead of contributing to inflation.
What if your definition of progress is different than theirs?
Don't know.
What if you agree with their definition of progress but don't think their policy proposals will actually get us there?
Don't care.
What matters is that everyone who disagrees to any extent is some kind of enemy, and the only solution is to have one-party / one-ideology control of all the levers of power so that we can sprint full-speed towards one idiot's authoritarian dream world. It's so weird, but this shit is all over Twitter... and everywhere else... right now.
It's the same kind of thinking that leads to the whole "Democracy is on the ballot" claims we're seeing from the DNC, as if a vote for anyone other than a Democrat is inherently a vote for the end of the modern world. But... The only thing that kills democracy is the idea that people should be forced to live under one-party rule, where their disagreements and criticisms are ignored, where their values and preferences are mocked and the party in power can do whatever they want with impunity.
It's just one more in a long line of embarrassing (but often effective) attempts at emotional blackmail. Vote for us or it's the end of civilization! Vote for us or you hate women! Vote for us or you're a racist!
If there was ever a more clear case for why we should be thrilled for split control of government and more gridlock than this kind of condescending display, I don't know what it is.
