The Gospel of John recounts one of the most famous miracles of Jesus, the resurrection of his friend Lazarus. This mysterious sign performed by the Lord allowed him to give to his disciples and followers one of the seven affirmations of the "I am", Jesus is the personification of the resurrection and the life, Jesus is God that became "son of man". Although Lazarus did not resurrect but revived, Jesus with this anticipated his own resurrection.
And the resurrection in the sacred scriptures has a very special meaning, because to resurrect is in a certain way to overcome the fruit of sin, death. Resurrecting in the Bible means reviving to never die, the resurrection is in essence the perfect immortality, the immortality with immutability. Strictly speaking, in the gospels, only Jesus was resurrected, because Jesus is the new Adam.
The gospel of John tells how Jesus, before arriving at the tomb of Lazarus, met his sister Martha, and there in a brief dialogue, Lord Jesus confirmed her faith and comforted Martha with his wise words in this way:
"When Marta heard that Jesus was coming, she went out to meet him, but Mary stayed at home.
´Lord,´ Martha said to Jesus, ´if you had been here, my brother would not have died. But I know that even now God will give you whatever you ask.´
Jesus said to her, ´Your brother will rise again.´
Marta answered, ´I know he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day.´
Jesus said to her, ´I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this?´
´Yes Lord,´ she replied, ´I believe that you are the Messiah, the Son of God, who is to come into the world´", John 11:20-27.
It is important to highlight in this dialogue that when Jesus spoke to Martha about a life that transcends death, Jesus referred to that life that once obtained cannot be lost, the contemplative life or eternal life.
