Not So June Cool Long Island Sunshine Won't Last Long
This is one of those rare moments in the spring season where there is no onshore flow and nothing else complicating matters. We actually have a cloud free sky over Long Island this morning with fresh nice dry non marine air. However the beauty of this morning is going to be short lived. The ocean is not the problem. This time it is the cold pattern we are in and a strong upper air disturbance which is over Southeastern Canada. This is sending a cold front southeastward so with that there will be clouds moving in by midday and there will also be a few downpours running around this afternoon and this evening. Even a rumble or two of thunder can't be ruled out. Temperatures this morning started out in the cool 50s. We will probably stop somewhere in the upper 60s to near 70.
EASTERN SATELLITE LOOP
The clouds are clearly evident on the satellite loop moving eastward across Pennsylvania and New York. The radars both regional and local are already picking up on some showers moving eastward. The first band is weakening but there will be others later this afternoon into this evening.
Wednesday we will still have issues with a cold upper air trough moving overhead so it will be another day that starts with some sunshine but with quickly developing clouds and the chance for an afternoon shower or two. Highs will just be in the cool 60s. Thursday and Friday shape up to be two nice days of sunshine with highs both days in the 70s. The wind off the ocean will likely keep temperatures in check especially on Friday.
GFS FORECAST SATURDAY 8PM 6/10/2018
Now for the weekend we have issues again with another east west frontal boundary which means we will be looking for the chance for showers and thunderstorms at some point. Best chances are likely to be late Saturday or Saturday evening and for a part of Sunday. The weekend will not be a washout but the risk is there. As for the Belmont Stakes Saturday I would think the early part of the huge race day will be dry and the track is likely to be fast and firm. By race time after 6pm the eyes will be on the sky to see if nature adds a wrinkle to Justifies quest for the Triple Crown. He loves the slop and this could be the first Triple Crown winner to win all three races in sloppy conditions. This of course assumes that it rains and we are not ready to say whether this will or won't be the case but the risk is there.
