Thursday May 16th begins the PGA Championship at the Bethpage Black course in Bethpage NY. We know how the weather has been this spring and it is coming at a time when the weather pattern isn't exactly the most favorable (dry with sunshine). Here is the weather outlook going forward. It isn't perfect but it is not as bad as it is today and Monday.
Late Wednesday night and Thursday morning an upper trough will be moving through with a few overnight showers going into Thursday morning but they should be gone by mid morning. If everything times out well we should see clouds with some breaks of sunshine Thursday afternoon. High temperatures will be in the 60s. Winds will be northwest at 10-15 mph much of the day.
Friday could wind up being the best of the days in this stretch with sunshine for a good portion of the day. A front will approach Friday evening with a few scattered showers at worst. They should occur after 5 or 6pm. Temperatures will reach the upper 60s to lower 70s with a southwest wind at about 10-15 mph. We will watch to see if the sea breeze kicks in late in the day and turn the wind more to the south and knock the temps down a bit.
Saturday sees another front approaching late in the day but we should see some sunshine ahead of it with highs reaching into the 70s (watch for a sea breeze in the afternoon). There is the chance for scattered showers Saturday evening when the front goes by.
Sunday sets up an onshore flow with a strong high to the north and a stalled front to the south. This looks like another chance where the dry air from the north sinks southward and saves the day with sunshine and some clouds. Highs will be in the 60s. Winds will be northeast at 10 to 15 mph and become more southeast later in the day. Temperatures could fall back in the late afternoon once the wind shifts to southeast. Right now I'm leaving rain out of the forecast for Sunday.
