Man Utd v Chelsea - Premier League
Round one of EPL will serve us with a clash of the titans between Chelsea and Manchester United at Old Trafford. This will be the first time we will get to see how the two English football giants prepared themselves for the upcoming season, as they once again fight for top spots in the league.
The two sides have met countless times before, and while there is no clear winner in an h2h fixture between Chelsea and Manchester United, we have by now learned those fixtures tend to finish with fewer than three goals. In fact, 10 out of the last 13 meetings ended in three or less. Furthermore, four out of the last five fixtures at Old Trafford ended with no more than two goals, which clearly suggests we might be in for yet another under match.
Having said that, there are a few more things to consider. First of all, the new managers. While it's still unclear how Lampard will perform as a new head coach of Chelsea, we already got a chance to see Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in action. What we have learned from him is that ever since he took over, United struggled to keep a clean sheet. In fact, the Red Devils are without a single clean sheet in 15 competitive matches, meaning we can't really count on a low scoring match. On the other side, Lampard is known to produce high scoring matches when faced against a stronger team. Last season Derby averaged four goals in five matches against Premier League teams, clearly indicating Lampard prioritizes an attacking football, which once again puts our theory of a low scoring match under a question.
Then there are preseason results of both teams. Chelsea produced some high scoring matches in last four fixtures. A 1:2 win against Barcelona, 3:4 win against Reading, 3:5 win against Salzburg and 2:2 draw against Monchengladbach all suggest Chelsea know how to score just as well as they know how to concede a goal. United on the other side scored at least once in all of their last six fixtures.
All things considered, this one seems very likely to end with at least one goal per side.
Prediction: Over 2.50 Goals
Burnley v Southampton - Premier League
Southampton enter the new season with a new coach and new goals. Mark Hudgens simply was not doing it for the Saints, who decided to bring in Ralph Hasenhuttl as a new head coach who did a good job last season and is expected to help them improve even further upon their disastrous 2018/19 season. It’s worth noting Ralph Hasenhuttl helped Southampton reach an 8-8-9 record, which might not seem exceptional, however, if we consider they achieved that record despite facing against Arsenal, Man United, Liverpool and Tottenham, it’s clear Ralph Hasenhuttl is a huge addition to the team who we have high hopes in for the 2019/20 season.
Even in the preseason, Southampton looked good, finishing their five friendlies with four wins and a draw. What we have gathered from those friendlies is that Southampton seem deadly upfront and with players such as Djenepo and Che Adams in the squad, we believe it’s worth keeping an eye on the Saints.
Burnley on the other side finished barely one point above Southampton last season, once again avoiding the relegation, which has been chasing them in the last three seasons. The biggest problem for Burnley last season was the lack of creativity upfront, with only 45 goals to their name. How did they manage to score only 45 despite having some potent strikers is still a mystery, all we can for sure say is that they are doing something wrong. Burnley did manage to impress in pre-season by defeating Nice 6:1, nonetheless, they must be ready to face off against the new and improved Southampton, who will look to start the season with a W.
For this match, we will side with Southampton. They improved drastically and while they should respect Burnley, we don’t believe the Saints will lose this one.
Prediction: Southampton +0.00 AH
