Steemit Discord Server - First Time User Training Video

in beyondbitcoin •  7 years ago  (edited)

In some of @officialfuzzy's posts (in the tag beyondbitcoin), he mentioned the "discord server" for Steemit and/or Whaleshares.

I was totally confused, and had not idea what that meant. So I set aside time tonight to learn how it worked, and to make a video to share with other newbies.

Discord Server is a Voice over IP (VOIP) chat program, similar to Skype. There are chat rooms, that might have 5 or 100 people "lurking" around.

So I joined the SteemIt group - and my findings were:

  1. Overall, most of the people were really nice, welcoming, and helpful
  2. You might hear a few swear words or people not being nice
  3. Some of the whales and influencers like Christopher hang out there, apparently for hours, probably while doing other work. [Net day, I found out the voice is @Mughat, maybe not Christopher.]
  4. You need to often wait for a good break in the conversation to jump in and talk - i.e. you need to be polite, just as you would in any group conversation.
  5. We had one "random" twelve year old pop-in, who oddly enough stumbled in the group, and didn't even know what SteemIt was. Someone got deep and asked her what her life purpose was.
  6. Someone usually had some music playing
  7. I found the sound quality excellent, no interruptions

I edited down the hour or two of chat to a few minutes to make the video effective for training; to give you a taste of what they talk about, and to whet your appetite if you want to go there.

If video does not load for you, it's because it had radio-type music playing in the background with copyrighted Beetle songs. Youtube already dinged me about it.

I'll update later with the invite code - still haven't figured out how that works. I just searched SteemIt for "Discord Server" and found one in @mrwang's post.

Here's a second video I did few days later - on audio tips and issues:

Next video training will probably be on Mumble. Let me know what topic you'd like to see covered, or what topic you feel newbies need to know.

Thanks for the shoutout. Upvoted! Yes, the podcast aims to be a good mix of random humour and Steemit tips.

Excellent

Seems like you had the right idea lol.. next time, you can mute the radio audio and have voice only so the music won't ruin your video.

Love the text version of the review either way

Cool, how do you meet the radio? Settings? Or there is an icon on the main page?

on desktop, right click the radio and either adjust the slider or click mute.

I believe you just press and hold for same options on mobile
