With our increasingly hectic lives, many of us can't seem to find the time to visit temples anymore. Temples have huge significance in Indian culture, and there are some truly amazing temples built hundreds of years ago that are definitely worth seeing at least once.

Bhubaneswar, the capital of Odisha, is often referred to as the "Temple City of India."; More than 700 temples, most of which are dedicated to Lord Shiva, attract thousands of tourists from all across the country to this destination each year. The best way to reach the city is to book New Delhi to Bhubaneswar flights. But before that, here are 4 must-see temples in the city.

4 Majestic Temples in Bhubaneswar

Did you know that name Bhubaneswar is derived from Shiva's Sanskrit name, Tribhubaneswar, which means "Lord of the Three Worlds"? The architectural design of temples in Bhubaneswar is a sub-style of the Nagara style of North Indian temples.

Here are four temples that are a must see:

  1. Lingaraj Temple: The splendid 180 feet tall Lingaraj Temple was built during the 11thcentury AD. It is the largest and most popular temple in Bhubaneshwar. The breath-taking sculptures of Gods and Goddesses, kings and queens and more are truly awe-inspiring. However, only Hindus are allowed to enter the temple.
  2. Brahmeshwar Temple: Also built in the 11thcentury AD, in honour of the presiding deity, Brahmeshwar, who is a form of Lord Shiva, the Brahmeshwar Temple easily finds place in every visitor's travel list. It is situated to the east of the Lingaraj Temple. The temple walls are decorated with splendid iconography of dancers and musicians and the ceiling is carved with lotuses. Other than the sculptures of Gods and Goddesses, animals and birds, you'll also find erotic sculptures and carvings of voluptuous damsels here.
  3. Mukteshwar Temple: Not every devotee likes a grand temple. A small and compact one can be more peaceful. It is why Mukteshwar Temple manages to attract a large crowd every year. Built in the 10th Century AD, this temple is famous for its astounding stone archway and imposing ceiling, flaunting an eight-petaled lotus. If you are in the temple grounds during mid-January, try to catch the Mukteshwar Dance Festival too.
  4. Parasurameswar Temple: One of the oldest temples in Bhubaneswar, Parasurameswar Temple was built during the 7th century. The entrance of this spectacular temple features carvings of elephants. On the exterior, you'll find various scenes, sculptures and shrines taken from Hindu mythology.
