After Pentecost, the Book of Acts of the Apostles narrates how was the life of the first Christian community. And the book does this from a very unique point of view, because it describes the communion, that is, the common life of those people who were moved by the holy spirit. Everything was put in common, the Bible tells us, everything belonged to everyone, and so no one was in need.
And this was something very important, because the life in common with Christ was the opposite of deception, lies, and oppression that are fruits of the flesh. Communion is essentially the ethical or correct order of society, but also the most visible manifestation of the Kingdom of God, the dominion or empire of God's perfections.
That is why the Book of Acts also tells a very special story, the story of Ananias and Sapphira. The Book of Acts tells us that Ananias and Sapphira, who were married, tried to deceive the leaders of the Church with a strategy of concealment, making a sale and hiding some of the money. For this serious sin against communion, Ananias and Sapphira died, causing great fear of God in the first Christian community.
This is how the Book of Acts relates the event:
"Now a man named Ananias, together with his wife Sapphira, also sold a piece of property. With his wife's full knowledge he kept back part of the money for himself, but brought the rest and put it at the apostles' feet.
Then Peter said, ´Ananias, how is it that Satan has so filled your heart that you have lied to the Holy Spirit and have kept for yourself some of the money you received for the land?
Didn't it belong to you before it was sold? And after it was sold, wasn't the money at your disposal? What made you think of doing such a thing? You have not lied just to human beings but to God.´
When Ananias heard this, he fell down and died. And great fear seized all who hear what had happened." Acts 5:1-5.
