Jesus begins his preaching with the call of the first disciples, Simon, called Peter and his brother Andrew:
"As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon called Peter and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. ´Come follow me´, Jesus said, ´and I will send you out to fish for people.´ At once they left their nets and followed him." Matthew 4:18-20
Then He said to them, Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men. Matthew 4,19.jpg
Jesus calls all of us to enter the Kingdom of God, some can enter, others cannot. The kingdom of God according to the bible, begins with a choice, like the call of Peter and his brother Andres, who decide to follow Jesus. Others, on the other hand, for the love of riches, cannot follow Jesus like the rich young man:
"´Teacher´, he declared, ´all these I have kept since I was a boy.´
Jesus looked at him and loved him. ´One thing you lack´, he said. ´Go sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.´
At this the man's face fell. He went away sad, because he had greath wealth.
Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, ´How hard is for the rich to enter the kingdom of God!´". Mark 10:20-23
This call that Jesus makes us is what is known as conversion. Conversion is the change of path, of direction of our life, is also a small miracle, a grace, a spiritual gift.
To fish men in the doctrine of the kingdom of God, is to convert people to the teachings of Jesus, that is to fish souls for salvation: two paths (the flesh and the spirit), two retributions (blessings or curses).
In the teachings of Jesus there are many teachings related to fishing:
"Once again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net that was let down into the lake and caught all kinds of fish. When it was full, the fishermen pull it up on the shore. Then they sat down and collected the good fish in baskets, but threw the bad away. This is how it will be at the end of the age. The angels will come and separated the wicked from the righteous.", Matthew 13:47-50
Fishing in this parable is again winning souls for God. Salvation and ruin are the basic choice, everything begins with a decision Jesus explains to us.
