Daily Bible reading: "For he has rescued us from the kingdom of darkness", Colossians 1:13

The kingdom of darkness represents in the Bible everything that is opposed to the kingdom of God, the kingdom of darkness fundamentally represents oppression, but this oppression is not simply something physical, but spiritual, the oppression of ignorance. Lies and deception oppress simple people, the oldest business in the world is the "business of ignorance", the Pharisees and Sadducees oppress the people with laws that are impossible to fully comply with, and hide from the people the wisdom (the key to knowledge) necessary to enter the Kingdom of God: "Woe to you experts in the Law, because you have taken away the key to knowledge. You yourselves have not entered, and you have hindered those who were entering", Luke 11:52
The message of Jesus represents something new, the common and simple people must be freed from oppression: "For he has rescued us from the kingdom of darkness and transferred us into the Kingdom of his dear Son", Colossians 1:13.

Jesus after announcing the beatitudes, denounces the most common heresies of his time, heresy is the teaching of error: "Love your neighbor and hate your enemy", in Matthew 5:4; the Law of the Talion, "eye for eye and tooth for tooth" in Matthew 5:38. The common good is natural among men because reason always looks to the good; but when heresies are transformed into the ordinary thinking of the people, into the common mentality, the culture fails to achieve the common good because heresies induce people to act out of passion and not rationally. Heresies are deeply oppressive and create "hopelessness" in the true sense of the word. This is the true meaning of the Kingdom of darkness, the despair, not expecting anything good from society and the people who is around us.
