The law of talion is a practical application of the concept of justice: give and receive proportionally (Aristotle). The purpose of the talion law is to limit revenge. Its application shows us that not all justice is good.
Jesus teach us about the law of talion:
"You have heard that it was said that it was said, "Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth". But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also. And if anyone wants to sue you and take your shirt, hand over your coat as well. If anyone forces you to go one mile, go with them two miles. Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you" Matthew 5:38-42
The law of talion is also present also in the old testament in Exodus 21:23-25; Leviticus 24:18-20, Deuteronomy 19:21 and Proverbs 24:29.
"But if there is serious injury, you are to take life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, burn for burn, wound for wound, bruise for bruise" Exodus 21:23-25
"Anyone who takes the life of someone's animal must make restitution - life for life. Anyone who injures their neigbor is to be injured in the same manner: fracture for fracture, eye for eye, tooth for tooth. The one who has inflicted the injury must suffer the same injury" Leviticus 24:18-20
"Show no pity: life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot." Deuteronomy 19:21
"I' ll do to them as they have done to me; I'll pay them back for what they did". Proverbs 24:29
Jesus uses the law of talion to explain to us the importance of mercy The law of Talion is the first heresy that Jesus faces, Jesus explains to us that this law is an heresy that take us away from the path of mercy, the spiritual gifts are way.
Heresy means teaching of the error, the concept of heresy is not religion is ethics. Justice has to take into account people's dignity.
The law of Talion comes from the Hammurabi code and it is one of the oldest laws of humanity.
