The first part of the book of Zechariah begins with an oracle of the prophet on the call to conversion: "Therefore tell the people: This is what the LORD Almighty says: ´Return to me´, declares the LORD Almighty, ´and I will return to you´, says the LORD Almighty. Do not be like your ancestors, to whom the earlier prophets proclaimed: This is what the LORD Almighty says: ´Turn from your evil ways and your evil practices´. But they would not listen or pay attention to me, declares the LORD.", Zechariah 1:3-4
The call to the conversion of this minor prophet enters the theme of the Kingdom of God, this Kingdom personified in David and Solomon had been lost and it was necessary to rebuild the Temple and the nation after the exile in Babylon.
Those who practice evil, that is, those who are unjust, destructive, involutive, retarding cannot inherit the Kingdom of God according to the Bible, then a change is necessary towards the path of God's perfections ("Be perfect as your heavenly Father is perfect", Matthew 5:48), a change towards the gift of mercy, piety, perseverance and truth: "And the word of the LORD came again to Zechariah: ´This is what the LORD Almighty said: ´Administer true justice; show mercy and compassion to one another. Do not oppress the widow or the fatherless, the foreigner or the poor. Do not plot evil against each other.´´", Zechariah 7:8-10.
The prophet also reminds us, and in a certain sense, the law of the harvest and the sowing, men have to choose a way and that way has a retribution: "The LORD Almighty has done to us what our ways and practices deserve, just as he determined to do so.", Zechariah 1:6.
The perfect seeks the perfect, the good looks for what is good, what pleases God reminds us the prophet is not external rites such as fasting, but being wise as God is wise: "For I desire mercy, not sacrifice, and acknowledgment of God rather than burnt offerings.", Hosea 6:6
