Psalm 73 is a bitter complaint against the apparent prosperity of the wicked, and the difficulty of the righteous to lead an upright and pure life. But as all the sapiential books teach us, the paths of life often appear to our eyes in a different way than they really are; and thus there is a final destination for both sinners and the righteous, and this is what the Psalm 73 explains to us as a continuation of Psalm 1, the Psalm of the two ways: "For the LORD watches over the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked leads to destruction" Psalm 1:6.
Psalm 73 in the Bible begins by teaching us the meaning of true beatitude: "Surely God is good to Israel, to those who are pure in heart" Psalm 73:1. God is the source of all good for man and true happiness lies in being close to God, in reaching that purity of heart that God requires of us; because ultimately the path of spirituality consists of being wise as God is wise.
But also Psalm 73 tells us that many times the righteous are tempted by sin:
"But as for me, my feet had almost slipped;
I had nearly lost my foothold.
For I envied the arrogant
when I saw the prosperity of the wicked
They have no struggles;
their bodies are healthy and strong.
They are free from common human burdens;
they are not plagued by human ills" Psalm 73:2-5.
Because oppression, which is the social expression of perversion, when it is strong affects even the judgment of the wisest, the Psalm continues and tells us:
"Surely in vain I have kept my heart pure
and have washed my hands in innocence.
All day long I have been afflicted,
and every morning brings new punishments" Psalm 73:13-14.
But the Psalm ends by teaching us that in the face of this situation, not all is lost, because perseverance remains, that gift that gives us the determination to resist all evil:
"My flesh and my heart may fail,
but God is the strength of my heart
and my portion forever" Psalm 73:26.
The Psalm concludes with the idea that beyond what most people in a world given over to sin decide, the blessed man must know how to choose the correct path to be blessed.
