The letter to the Hebrews is an epistle addressed to Christians coming from the Jewish religion. In the epistle Paul speaks of the promise of entering the rest of God:"Therefore, since the promise of entering his rest still stands, let us be careful that none of you be found to have fallen short of it", Hebrews 4:1.
The rest of God in the letter to the Hebrews is the same eternal life: "This is eternal life that they may know you, the only true God", John 17:3.
Eternal life in practical terms is the worship of wisdom; "To speak of wisdom is to speak of God", explains Tomas Aquinas. In essence the rest of God is not a physical place after death but a state of mind: "The eternal happiness consists in the vision of God", Summa Theologiae.
God's rest is also the realization of hope, the virtue of hope is the security to inherit the eternal life, the virtue of hope accompanies the virtue of justification and faith in the baptism: "Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. For we know in part and we prophesy in part, but when the perfect comes what is in part disappears" 1 Corinthians 13:8-9
"The perfect" in Corinthians can be interpreted as integrity, conformity to Jesus.
Paul in his letter to the Hebrews tells us about a promise that is born of the new covenant:
"For every house is built by someone, but God is the builder of everything. Moses was faithful as a servant in all God's house, bearing witness to what would be spoken by God in the future. But Christ is faithful as the Son over God's house. And we are his house, if endeed we hold firmly to our confidence and the hope in which we glory." Hebrews 3:4-6
But for the fulfillment of this promise in the rest of God, we need the gift of fear of God or piety (constancy, firmness, devotion, equanimity, stability), that is, to have a heart well predisposed to the word of God:
"So, as the Holy Spirit says:
Today, if you hear his voice,
do not harden your hearts
as you did in the rebellion,
during the time of testing in the wilderness." Hebrews 3:7-8.
