If you have grown up in the church, you have probably heard or read the story of David and Goliath on numerous occasions, which is found in I Samuel chapter 17. In brief, Goliath of Gath, a giant and the champion of the Philistines, Israel’s adversary in numerous battles over may years, had been taunting the army of Israel for several days when David, only a youth at that time, arrived on the scene to give food he had brought on his father’s orders to his brothers, who were in the army. Upon his arrival, he saw what Goliath was doing in mocking the army of Israel which greatly bothered him. Noticing that no one else was brave enough to stand up to Goliath, he volunteered for the job. As we all know, the story ends with David killing Goliath with a stone which he had hurled from his slingshot and then cut off Goliath’s head with Goliath’s own sword. One often overlooked fact in this story is that David picked up 5 smooth stones when he went to fight Goliath. People sometimes wonder; “If David had enough faith in God that he would be victorious in battle in killing Goliath, why did David take 5 stones and not just one when he faced off with Goliath?
DID YOU KNOW that Goliath was only one of 5 giant brothers of yet another giant? That is right, Goliath had four brothers. David, even though he was still in his youth, actually had so much faith in God, that he was confident he would defeat Goliath AND if he had to, to defeat Goliath’s four brothers also. You can find confirmation that Goliath had four brothers in II Samuel 21:16-21 where it reads of how David’s mighty men in various battles slew the four brothers of Goliath; Abishai slew Ishbibenob, Sibbechai slew Saph, Elenon slew Lahmi, and Jonathan, a nephew of David (not King Solomon’s son), slew the brother of Goliath that had 6 fingers on each hand and 6 toes on each foot.
Why were there giants over 10 feet tall in Biblical times and why did some of them have 6 fingers on each hand and 6 toes on each foot? DO YOU KNOW?
It is the glory of God to conceal a thing; but the honor of kings is to search out a matter.- Proverbs 25:2
