Angry motorists are a legitimate problem for pedestrians

What makes motorists so angry? How many other aspects of public engagement result in the anger and danger of motorists who lack empathy or lose their temper?

There is no doubt that many motorists drive and act as if they own the road, why is that?

Would we have the same problems on private roadways? I doubt it, many of them would be relying on safety records that would encourage them to alter behavior. Maybe even banning drivers who are reckless. accountability is a good thing.

If you ever traverse our built environments by foot or bicycle you quickly notice that motorists behave as if they own the road, clearly they know they do not. It is strange behavior.

I advocate for privatization of roadways, if the road is valuable it will pay for itself. Would a private road allow pedestrian traffic? Well, think about it - if we had to actually pay for the build environment the result would be closer human scale infrastructure. This is one reason it is clear this would benefit pedestrians and certainly they would provide a means for the pedestrian and bicycle to have a place in this. Catering to the motor vehicle would slowly die off as it is very expensive. We would probably end up with human scale walkable environments clustered closer together with flying cars to get us from town to town. Nobody knows the details but we certainly would not have this monolithic car centric debt ridden system we currently endure

Check out this nice piece at Strong Towns. It is very odd to see how many comments these articles get. Anytime someone has a thought provoking idea it seems like people just jump to criticize. I think that is in typically lame, most people who critique are arm chair quarterbacks who have actually not tried to make a difference. they just like to complain.

I don’t post about close calls in the group. I don’t discuss angry run-ins with my friends who don’t bike. For years, I have actively censored this part of my lifestyle to build a sense of inclusiveness and avoid any chance of scaring new riders off the road. I’ve downplayed interactions to make them seem more manageable. To my friends that don’t bike, I strive to project the take-the-lane attitude of someone who never cowers in the face of a car.

There’s just one problem with this image: it’s not true.
