Riding in the road and doing it properly requires some intentional actions on your behalf. If you are not already controlling the lane then begin doing so NOW!
Why is it valuable to ride the full lane? What happens if you want to turn left, avoid a dead possum, ride through a traffic circle and go left? You need to have the ability to get into the left lane on 4 lane roads to turn left. Dodging a dead animal or someones abandoned futon is best done by controlling the lane, not darting out from the paved shoulder into the active and fast moving traffic platoons.
I recorded a nearby traffic circle well known to confuse motorists. In this "how-to" I ride straight, if I had gone left I would have entered the left lane early on before the intersection. Always make your move well before you have to, do not dart and dodge. That is how you get hit.
Notice I am patient and wait for a safe time to enter the intersection. Also notice i am in control of the lane, motorists will be tempted to squeeze past you if you are timid. Ride bold but safe and consistent.
- Scan the traffic circle long before you reach it and you can usually time your entrance and zoom through it without stopping by adjusting your speed.
- Sometimes, as in this video the platoon of motorists just came from a traffic light and are bunched up.
- I generally wave my right arm as i ride through the circle to inform the cars entering on my right I am there.
- I also wear hi-vis clothing and now ride with the Cycliq that includes a light.
- Make yourself known!
