Shopping at my small local grocery store in Old San Juan two blocks from the governor’s mansion.
Store manager says they are out of 20% of items and confirms that the food supply chain is falling apart. He compared it to “another Maria.”
Maria in this case was the hurricane that killed over 1,000 people and plunged millions of Puerto Ricans into months of darkness as the electrical grid collapsed. It’s a comparison that we should should find deeply concerning, since this Maria will be global, not limited to the Caribbean islands, and because of Hurricane Brandon damage.
He also said food prices are going to keep shooting up and up, to the point that many people in Puerto Rico will have to cut their food intake and go hungry.
Meanwhile, the Democrats, who were hot and horny to make Puerto Rico a state in 2020 when they thought they could do absolutely nothing new for Puerto Rico and get two Democrat Senators, have been horrified, not by the collapse of the food supply chains, but to learn that they would probably get two Republican Senators.
So Democrat interest in making Puerto Rico a state has disappeared, which makes me think that when the food collapse comes next year, Puerto Rico will not be able to count on any special financial or transportation assistance.
