The world-cup started with much fanfare, with everyone rooting for their team to go far or ultimately win the world cup. Many of individuals tipped Germany to retain the world cup they won 4 years ago in Brazil.
However, fate has something else in stock for them. Germany were ousted in the Group stages by A South Korean masterclass. A purported curse is going around teams that won the Fifa world-cup. The team tends to be eliminated in the group stage.
> It all started in the year 1998 when France won it, they were ousted in the group stage in South-korea 2002 world cup. Brazil won it in 2002 and were ousted in the group stages in Germany 2006. Italy won it in 2006 and were eliminated in the group stages in South Africa 2010. Spain won it in 2010 and were ousted in the group stages in Brazil 2014.
Now the Germany national team won it in 2014, they even won the confederations cup fielding second strings of the squad. Now they are out of the Russia 2018 world cup.
As if to prove the curse is real, the runner up in the 2014 world cup in Brazil was also beaten by France in the second round here in Russia. Argentina were on the brink of losing after drawing Iceland and losing to Croatia. However, a Nigeria win against Iceland gave them some hope which they utilized when the beat Nigeria 2-1 thanks to some poor finishing by Nigerian striker Odion Ighalo. They qualified as the second team behind Croatia in group D. They faced European giants France where Kylian Mbappe masterclass proved too much for the Argentines as they lost 4-3.
All eyes were on Spain, as they have some of the technically gifted squads to make things happen. However, they were not potent enough to trouble a resolute Russian team that held still till the end of extra time where penalties decided the winner and they won.
Cavani proved too hot for Cristiano Ronaldo led Portugal team as Uruguay now faces France in the quarters final.
Presently Argentina, Portugal, Spain, Denmark, Mexico are all out in the round of 16. Which means
Uruguay will face France
Croatia will face Russia
Brazil will face Belgium
England or Colombia will face Sweden or Switzerland
The Big question now is Who will win the world cup
As things stand now. I believe The France team has what it takes to go all the way to the final and win it. It will not be an easy task, because they will have to beat Uruguay first then face either of Brazil, Belgium or Japan.
Brazil haven’t been convincing. If Mexico have been clinical today, they would have been miles away before Brazil gets their act together.
France have the defence, the midfield and the attack. They also have a plan B option when things don’t work out well. Fekir can come in to put more energy, while Giroud is noted for his aerial presence. I think the only tough opponent they may encounter is Belgium. I strongly believe Belgium tactics will let them down in their match. So anticipate a mouth-watering Semi-final clash between Belgium and France.
