Andrew Warhola was born on August 6, 1928 in the Oakland neighborhood of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, his parents of Slovak immigrants.
His father, Ondrej Warhola, was a construction worker, while his mother, Julia Warhola, worked in embroidery. His family belongs to the religious Christian Catholics and they preserved much of their Slovak culture and heritage.
At the age of eight, Warhol was diagnosed with a rare disease in the nervous system, which he left bedridden for several months. During this period of illness, his mother gave him, as an artist, first drawing lessons; drawing soon became his favorite hobby during childhood.He also loved cinema, and at the age of nine his mother bought a camera. He also loved photography, took the basement of their home and worked on the installation and application of his primitive films.
Warhol studied at Holmes Elementary School and took free art classes at the Carnegie Institute in Pittsburgh, now known as the Carnegie Museum of Art.
In 1942, at the age of fourteen, he lived again a great tragedy in his life, the death of his father due to hepatitis or severe jaundice, and increased his grief because he could not attend the funeral, but remained hiding under his bed. His father, who was faithful to his son's talents, spent all his savings on Andy's education.
In the same year, Andy began attending the Schenley High School. After graduating in 1945, he joined the Carnegie Institute to study the graphic design known today at Carnegie Mellon University.

Warhol suffered from chronic pain in the gallbladder. On February 20, 1987, he was transferred to New York Hospital where he underwent surgery to remove the gall bladder. The operation was successful and began to recover, but after several days he suffered complications leading to a sudden heart attack. He died on 22 February 1987 at the age of 58 years. His memorial service at St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York City.
