If you are a fish swimming calmly by the sea and there is a huge shark about to eat you, your best option is to run for your life (or swim hahaha). Unless you're the little friend that I'll present next, in that case you just have to blow up like a spiked ball ... That's right, we'll talk about blowfish today!
As I said in the previous story, this friend lives in seas and estuaries usually tropical, although they are also found in temperate waters up to 300 m deep. They belong to the family of Tetraodontidae, whose name comes from the Greek "tetra" which means "four" and "odous" which means "teeth" because the bones of their jaws merged like a beak that divides into 4 teeth. This family has at least 28 genera with 120 species in total.
The common name "Blowfish" refers to its ability to absorb water or air through their mouths to a diverticulum of the stomach, increasing several times its size when scared or attacked to look threatening. Something like the guys who fill their lungs with air to inflate their chest and look bigger.
Many species are of medium size with 30-50 cm, but some can exceed 100 cm. They are quite slow fish but they compensate with a powerful neurotoxin in their internal organs called Tetraodotoxin to defend themselves.
Taxonomy:
Kingdom: Animalia.
Philum: Chordata.
Class: Actinopterygii (Fish with bony spines on their fins).
Order: Tetraodontiformes.
Family: Tetraodontidae.
They usually eat hard-shelled invertebrates such as crustaceans or shellfish, this is the reason for their jaws with strong muscles.
This was all for now, in another post I will talk about the tetraodotoxin with more depth (Depth ... Ba dum Tsss). Regards!.
Ba dum Tsss). Saludos!.
