You may be used to me posting these from my personal account (@jaki01), well the steemSTEM team loved what I was trying to do with you all, and saw how much you were enjoying coming up with answers. So they have invited me into the group to continue these contests and have offered to help increase the reward for determining the correct answer! What could be more fun than activating your brain and at the same time having the opportunity to win up to 15 steem. 🙂
Rules - what are the requirements to win the prize?
It's simple! The winner is the first person to post the correct solution (correct number and correct unit). The prize for the correct answer is now 15 steem. We will send it to the winner immediately after the article is paid out (7 days after posting).
If nobody is able to determine the solution before Sunday, April 30th, 2017 at 10 pm (German time!) the prize (15 STEEM) will be added to the next competition (bringing that one up to 30 STEEM!!).

Your Biology Challenge to Solve:
Today let's make a mental trip to "the planet of dragons" (where the same Mendelian genetic rules apply as on earth).
At this place very far from us the male dragon "Tyrodocus" and his female partner "Ankylotops" are expecting a baby dragon.
The attributes of the future descendant depend on the alleles (variants of genes) of its parents, and we have:
dominant allele | dominant attribute | recessive allele | recessive attribute |
---|---|---|---|
A | is able to spit fire | a | can't spit fire |
B | has poison fangs | b | is nontoxic |
D | has red eyes | d | has yellow eyes |
E | has a green tongue | e | has a violet tongue |
The dragon parents wish so much to get a baby who can spit fire, has poison fangs, yellow eyes and a violet tongue. Unfortunately the probability for that is rather low only.
Given as help:
- Genotype of "Ankylotops": AABbDdee.
- Genotype of "Tyrodocus": aabbDdEe.
- Genes are inherited independently from each other (they aren't coupled).
Question:
What is the exact probability that the dragon baby will have all desired attributes (can spit fire, has poison fangs, yellow eyes and a violet tongue)? Calculations/explanations are required.
Congrats @a-condor as winner of the first #biologychallenge under the SteemSTEM flag! You were the first who brought up the correct solution together with a very nice explanation!
Thanks a lot also for participating @rahul.stan ! You finally found the correct solution, but without explanation. We decided to reward you with 5 steem, though! :)
I hope you enjoyed the contest - if yes, stay tuned for the next round. :)

Thank you. Actually I misread the genotype of Ankylotops the first time. The second time, I wasn't sure so I didn't explain.

It must have been that strange name "Ankylotops" which confused you. ;-)

Its been a while though. But from the way i was taught in my secondary school.
The answer is 1 out of 16. 1/16
I am unable to post the picture of my workings though

I got the probability for each characteristics by doing allele crossing that of the parents and multiplying them.
Spit fire= 4/4
Poison fangs=2/4
Yellow eyes=1/4
Violet tongue=2/4
All giving 1/16 when multiplied together.

The answer is 0.125
Explanation:
Total possibilities: 64
Favourable possibilities: 8
Therefore probability : 8÷64 = 0.125

You did not work under the framework that the genes were independent units. They are. Getting a result for say spitting fire has no effect on the probability of getting one of the other traits. Thus they can not all be assumed to be a part of the same pool.

I misread the genotype of Ankylotops so my answer is wrong.

Ah, I see. That is how you ended up with 64 possibilities. But 8 potential phenotypes. Jeez it's too early in the morning for me and I'm not even finishing my thoughts.

Result is zero.
We are checking Generation F1 and dominant–recessive inheritance. During the first step of mitosis the DNA will be unfolded and divided into genes (humans have 23). Then all the genes are divided into alleles. The cell builds up a new membrane in between the allele sets and we have two cells now with different sets of alleles. After fertilization father and mother alleles will be recombined to genes and the reproduction of an individual is starting.
Aa Bb DD eE
Aa Bb Dd ee
Aa bb Dd Ee
Aa bb dd ee
With the given parental attributes there is only one combination resulting in yellow eyes (dd). Number four. Unfortunally in this combination is no poison (B) available.

The allele for yellow is only d. To get the probabilty for yellow eyes you only need to consider the genotypes of the parents concerning the gene D (eye color, with the alleles D and d).
That means because of the genotypes of the parents you get Dd X Dd. The possible results are then DD, Dd, Dd and dd, where only dd leads to yellow eyes. Then the probability of dd obviously is 1/4, as @a-condor correctly wrote.
