Great Blue Heron heading to Roost in the Waning Daylight
Today I went out to several local places scouting for a big day tomorrow. Bruce Labar and I are planning a Pierce County, WA big day tomorrow. There are not big days recorded for most months in most Washington counties, including our home county Pierce. Bruce and I, sometimes with others, hope to do a big day in every month over the next 2 years, maybe all this year.
March is an in-between month. Many of the winter birds are harder to find, some like Trumpeter Swan are probably all gone north. Many of the nootropic breeders have not yet arrived from the breeding grounds. It will be a tough time to generate a big list, but we are going to see what we can do.
The photo above is of the common long-legged wader of our area, the Great Blue Heron, or GBH as most birders call it. You probably think of these birds as birds of marshes, fields, shallow ponds, namely on the ground feeding on small fish, frogs, other small vertebrates and invertebrates. You may not know that they nest high in trees, usually in medium to large groups called a rookery. Here is a photo of a GBH rookery I took recently near the Columbia River.
Wish us luck tomorrow, good birding, and Steem on!
Have a great big day tomorrow. It will be very interesting to see the outcome. Good luck.
