Female Wood Duck with babies. Wood Ducks are relatively common in our area of Western Washington, but can be secretive and hard to see. The male is very ornate as ducks go, but this female can be nearly invisible in the woodland ponds that it favors. These ducks nest in trees, and have a habit of laying their eggs in other Wood Duck's nests, to increase their gene pool going forward without adding to their parental care duties.
