Common Redshanks (inkl. mating)

in birdphotography •  3 years ago

The common Redshanks is a common bird in Europe, Asia and Africa. In Austria it can be seen from spring till autumn and during spring I like to watch their mating ritual. I found this bird already on 3 different places here in Austria. At the Inn River, at Lake Neusiedler and also in Upper Austria near Linz at the Danube River. The common redshank has pretty good camouflage colored feathers and when it is hiding at the right spot it is very difficult to spot it. Luckily that this bird is not really shy so if it is at a breeding spot or in a good habitat you can get pretty close without disturbing it.

Although it has a good camouflage color I like its appearance very much. I think it is a very beautiful bird and I am always happy when I see it. It is a common bird but I only know one place where I can see it with a high chance - Lake Neusiedler. On the other places where I already saw and photographed it, Danube and Inn River it is only a short term visitor and often only there during migration time. Then you have to proof you luck and find it within a very short timeframe.

These pictures from Spring this year at Lake Neusiedler also show a mating picture of the male and the female redshank.
