How well are you curating financially?
Are you making the best use of your Steem Power and votes?
Welcome to week 6 - This is the sixth post in a series which looks at a method to work out just how well your curation skills rank against other Steemians.
The users listed in this report have been selected at random and vary in account size (Steem Power).
Curation and its rewards system is a complex beast. The structure of how the rewards are decided upon for each voter have been explained many times in detail, and here are some of the best:
https://steem.io/getinvolved/paid-to-curate/
https://steemit.com/steemit/@calamus056/curation-rewards-explained-in-great-detail
My takeouts from the above, and general opinion is:
Voting in the first minute will earn you a curation reward of almost 0.000
Voting between 1 and 29 minutes will earn an increasing % of the curation rewards split, this value peaking at 30 minutes and remaining the same from this point onwards
The goal is to get in prior to the big hitters, but not too early in that your % in the 2nd point isn't too low (e.g. 15 minutes - approx 50%)
It is commonly suggested that 20-25 minutes is the 'best' time to vote (especially on known power-authors posts because they are likely to have more auto-votes coming in at these times - and you want to be ahead of these votes)
A vote of equal weight and equal Steem Power at 30 minutes will give more reward than a vote at, for example 1 hour - first come first served, but don't arrive to early :)
As you can see, a combination of many variables such as Steem Power, voting strength, voting weight, and time of vote, (and more) all play a part in the amount of reward received.
Is there a skill to it though? And how well are you doing?
I have used the following method to obtain what I need for this report.
Accessed the steemit.com Wallet to collect Steem Power and + or - the leased/delegated steem
Used the 'Rewards' drop-down menu to find 'Curation rewards' for the previous week
Therefore, my data is gathered manually and the curation period is only for the previous week.
This is obviously not ideal and reduces the potential to widen the results set because of the time it takes to gather the data.
A look into the SteemSQL DB is on-going, and I hope to be able to build this list programmatically in future.
This weeks results
The key columns are:
Curation: Total curation rewards for the previous week
SP Total: Total vested Steem Power (including delegated SP)
Curation/SP %: The % of curation rewarded Steem Power in relation to amount of Steem Power owned
This final column is what I feel is a genuine indicator of how well you are working the curation game with the tools (including vested Steem Power) that you have at your disposal.
Imagine you have 10,000 Steem Power, and I have 1,000 Steem Power.
After a week curating, the rewards for both of us are 1 SP each.
In my mind, I'm working my Steem Power 10 X harder - If you, in this example earned curation rewards of 10 SP (and I earned 1 SP), then I would say we were curating with equal skill - rewards wise.
The % of curation rewarded Steem Power in relation to amount of Steem Power owned
This weeks' findings:
Back at the top, and for 3 of the past 4 weeks, the unstoppable @dontstopmenow! His rewards % for the week is almost 5 times the average - brilliant!
A close 2nd and an excellent result for @fiveboringgames who has scored well in previous weeks also
Last weeks' leader, @biophil is a very respectable 3rd and is curating at 3 times the average
@buggedout, a consistent top 5 performer, drops a place from last week and is in 4th spot
An interesting account in 5th this week is @botdot, who I know is 'front-running' the @booster bot. That is is a good curation % for a known auto-voting account
An average performance from myself this week scoring 0.14281
The actual average % curation reward/Steem Power this week is 0.15266, slightly down from 0.15869 last week
Accounts @htliao, @tumutanzi, and @paulag have been removed from the league for 1 week as recent Steem Power movements have skewed their results too much to be meaningful.
A few points:
If you have spotted any glaring errors in my post, please let me know so I can fix them.
If you would like to be added or removed from my personal curation league (next weeks post) let me know
If a user has powered down or powered up Steem in the past week, the results will be skewed
Some Users, 'Power Users', and Whales (listed in this post and otherwise) are not aiming for max. curation rewards, and are supporting communities with their votes. e.g. @pharesim, @good-karma, and @acidyo
If you have any other comments, please enter them into the box below
And ...
I feel that curation should be about finding awesome content and giving it an up-vote - irrelevant of the curation rewards you might receive

This is my first time reading a post in this series Asher, and first I want to tell you great job! This is really interesting, a terrifically valuable post series in my opinion. To anyone interested in curation, this provides a wonderful starting point. Analyze the voting habits of those high on your list and you should have a great start!
It should be relatively easy to build a SQL query that returns this info and sorts it by Curation/SP% - we can limit the query to return top 50, or top 100, or whatever, and in this manner you can sample the entire population of active Steemit users. I will DM you RE this.
A brief note on my own inclusion on this list - I would undoubtedly be higher if it were not for my habit of spending a decent chunk of my voting power upvoting comments that will never give me any curation reward. I do this because I personally feel there is a dearth of honest and thoughtful commenters. I would love to see something like Curie that looks for awesome comments and gives them a big upvote - even a $5 upvote in the context of a comment would be a huge encouragement to a thoughtful commenter, and would probably go a long way toward incentivizing people to do more than say "nice", "I like it it", "awesome", or any of the other generic comments that I lump together in the same class as "Please follow me I follow you". It may seem harsh to lump a nice but generic comment together with follow for follow spam, but come on people! If you like a post, say why you like a post! Incidentally, along these lines, the bots "gentlebot" and it's cousin (which has a name along the lines of "thing-one" but that is not it and I can't remember the right name) do hunt for good comments and upvote them. I love these bots and was thrilled as a beginning Steemit user when some of my comments received their benediction.
You see so many calls for more original content creators. That is all well and good, but to be honest, we can't all be amazing content creators. Some people are talented and creative and spout content out like a geyser. Some people, maybe not so much but they can grind away and produce original content in a workmanlike manner. Others may not have the skill and aptitude to create truly original content. That is fine. Everyone can leave an honest and thoughtful comment.
Sorry to derail the conversation, I know that got off topic! This is a subject I have been ruminating on for a while now, and planning a post (or series) about.
Cheers - Carl

Great response Carl!
Some great points made, especially regarding the up-voting of good, well thought-out comments. @the-thing is the bot I think you are referring to.
Absolutely, and same here - I've mentioned this as my 'valid' excuse for not hitting anywhere near the highs of the top curator reward %'s. As you say, a decent comment is perhaps more encouragement than most people can give money-wise.
Looking forward to discussing the SQL more with you.
Thank you!
Asher

Super nice, I moved up in curation effectiveness considerably, still not really in your table, but my results in effectiveness is about 60% higher than the previous week.

I'm glad you are noticing an improvement, which is the main reason why I am keeping as many people on the original list as possible.

I think that the reward system should have a process in which authors wait for a week, go back and re-examine the comments, and then provide special rewards to those comments that they feel significantly added value to the information package that comprises both the post and the comments. Once you open up a post that has value, you quickly realize (I think) that the total value you will receive at the end of that experience can be greatly enhanced by the quality of the comments.
As regards the valuation of comments, the whole community, and particularly the leadership, need to engage in a great debate about how we do that properly -- that is, in such a way as to aggressively incentivize peoples' investment of time in creating valuable comments.
What am I getting at? We have made a mistake, while designing the reward system, in believing that this is all about “how many dollars you receive” and who has or has not the power to distribute a lot of those dollars.

Hello Asher!
I agree that a post would be a good idea. However someone else in this discussion, including you of course, might consider doing that. My time is taken currently up in preparing materials that I use to add value (via comments) to interesting posts made by others.
Cheers!
P.S. whoever does the post might try to do a survey of related commentary in other posts made in the past weeks/months, so that the post draws upon ideas propounded by a broad set of Steemit members.

Luckily, authors who have the funds CAN directly reward productive comments even with the current system.
It just comes down to authors actually doing it.

Hello torquewrench!
The following is not to criticize your remark, if for no other reason that it is correct!
However, if we leave the situation as it is now then here is what we are accepting:
The second point is vastly more important than the first one. Why should we agree (even implicitly ) to decide that wealth and rewards in this community are to be defined just in terms of Steem Dollars and Steem Power and allocation of same? That's a question we need to discuss.
If we can move to a much broader and more helpful definition, we lay the groundwork for designating a special review process by authors mentioned in my first point.

Why would I want a computerized process to determine how I review and reward comments?
I might just be special, but I'm completely capable of reviewing comments and rewarding users without having to have a "designated process", and most other users are capable too!
Having a "designated process" of rewarding users removes the spontaneous, HUMAN aspect of the reward for both the giver and the reciever.
A "designated process" is easily automated, which decreases the value also.
We are in an age where a handi programmer could (theoretically ) automate the generation of a post and automate a reply to a post.
If a set, "designated procedure" for rewarding a comment is implemented, it could be automated too.
At that point, why have humans in the loop at all?
Social media is only "social" if humans are interacting with the inquisitive insight, emotional caring, creative thoughtfulness and limited resources.
Now if you could find a way to allow users to send chocolate chip cookies through the steemit.com platform, that would be an awesome reward!

Actually, I thought it was the other way around! I mean the pay outs for time invested in authoring is much better. I try to keep my VP above 70% at all times (as recommended) and yet last week I only earned .075 cents (according to my account stats) in curation rewards.

Hi @steemitri
Good question!
I would say if you are first to upvote a good comment then this is the best time. I can't support this thinking with data though, yet.
Cheers!
