Digital Bitbox Hard Wallet

in bitbox •  7 years ago  (edited)

So everything about this wallet is cool, except I DON'T THINK I CAN GET MY PRIVATE KEYS OR SEED PHRASES OTHER THAN THEY ARE CONTAINED ON THE MICRO SD CARD!!! I will surely spill something on it or lose it somehow, is there a way to get my private key info?

Bitbox website has a backup center (https://digitalbitbox.com/backup) with a template to create your own wallet, and then an algorithm creates a bunch of seeds, including one for Electrum to back up BitCoin, and a bunch that supposedly correspond to the available ETH address you can choose when connecting BitBox thru MyEtherWallet (MEW).

I tried to view my BitBox wallet address by selecting "Private Key" option rather than "BitBox" and used a key created by link above. It created a new wallet address in MEW that is NOT one of the available addresses on BitBox. This also happened when I tried the "Import" function in MetaMask and used one of the private keys generated by the link above.

Now when I look at MEW through MetaMask, it shows these new wallet address that are linked to the private keys generated by the link above. There is a large "LOOSE" under the icon for each of these new accounts. I'm always good at making things worse, can someone help me before I lose a bunch of tokens?

These are the specific instructions listed by BitBox. It mentions the backup is saved as a pdf on the SD card and you can connect to secure printer. Can I open a file somewhere in my computer and extract the code? lol as you can tell, I'm not extremely technical...

  • To recover your Bitcoin wallet without a Digital Bitbox, enter the wallet backup text and password in the above boxes, click 'generate', and import the recovery key into the Electrum software wallet.

  • To recover Ethereum without a Digital Bitbox, enter the wallet backup text and password in the above boxes, click 'generate', and enter an Ethereum private key into MyEtherWallet. The order of private keys corresponds to the order of public addresses when 'viewing' a wallet in MyEtherWallet.

  • The backup is saved as a PDF file on the micro SD card for convenience. Plug the micro SD card into a trusted printer if you wish to also make a paper backup.

  • To load your own wallet into a Digital Bitbox, put the PDF file on the micro SD card inside a folder named 'digitalbitbox' in the root directory. Then, insert the SD card into the Digital Bitbox, and load your wallet using the desktop app. High quality randomness is crucial! Otherwise, a thief may be able to guess your key and take your coins.

  • A wallet is generated from the backup text and password using a modified BIP39 procedure. In particular, PBKDF2 strengthening is done twice (22,528 total rounds) for stronger protection.

  • Standard wallet addresses are generated following the BIP32 and BIP44 specifications. For a multi-signature wallet, the base BIP32 key path is m/100'/45'/0'. For Ethereum, the base BIP32 key path is m/44'/60'/0'/0.

Is there any way to get private key or seeds off the Digital BitBox? I really want to hand-write them down like the rest. What do you think about the pdf allegedly on the SD card? Thank you in advance for your help fellow STEEMIANS, I love being able to reach out, I know someone can help me..... ;-)
