My Morning Coffee โ˜•๏ธ & Rant About Why BitPay Sucks ๐Ÿ’ณ๐Ÿ’ธ๐Ÿ˜‚

in bitcoin โ€ขย  7 years agoย  (edited)

A while back, I mentioned that I would be not using my BitPay card anymore...

Unfortunately, Iโ€™ve been having no choice but to use it, because ive been living off of my crypto supply ๐Ÿ˜ Hereโ€™s why Iโ€™m salty about this though...

You have to (prematurely) sell your Bitcoin for Fiat.

This is pretty lame if you ask me... This is why I like the idea of the TenX card, because with that card you keep your crypto up until the very moment you make your purchase, no selling of any currency necessary!

It keeps making new BTC addresses.

If you frequently move bitcoin around, youโ€™ll probably agree that itโ€™s an annoying hassle to constantly deal with new addresses for depositing! Theyโ€™re already ridiculous as is, but having a new one every once in a while is just more annoying because you canโ€™t memorize it at all.

The fees are high.

This part you probably could have guessed. Itโ€™s always at least $3 or $4 to sell your BTC. WTF? That makes no sense. What exchange are these clowns using? Mount GOX??? Complete idiocy that they think these fees are justified. Weโ€™re not moving the BTC around, weโ€™re merely selling it. So I donโ€™t get why a miner fee would even apply...

One time it took ~24 hours just to receive some BTC I sent to my BitPay Wallet!

I know what youโ€™re thinking... WTFFF? 24 hours for a BTC confirmation? Iโ€™m not sure if the BTC blocks were just FULL AF or what, but I think that thatโ€™s insane, especially in a world where we need money on a timely basis...

What cards do you use? Shift? TenX? Leave your responses below! I really, really want to stop using BitPay as soon as possible so any help and guidance is much appreciated!

I signed up for the BitPay Visa card for $9.95 + Network Fee, which turned out to be about $11, more than the card itself. The fees are destroying Bitcoin Core. Perhaps BitPay should switch to Bitcoin Cash or Bitcoin Gold which brings mining back to the people.

You should go with the SHIFT card, which is partnered with coinbase. No BS fees, literally just exactly $10 of btc, and when you make purchases you don't need to pay fees to sell from btc > usd, very satisfied by shift. Sorry to hear you got the bitpay one LOL :/ It can be a backup one, and bitpay does offer BCH but it's annoying having to sell your crypto in advance, instead of it automatically happening at point of sale.

I'm with you on this. I have been less than impressed with my bitpay experience, much for the same reasons.

I haven't gotten another card yet, but like @lpfaust has been endorsing, Shift card seems to be pretty decent if you're alright with coinbase.

I am going to do some more research on TenX before I go ordering any other cards. Sounds like a good deal there.

Look forward to seeing you on Thurs!

Yeah I'm gonna compare all available options. I want to minimize the fees as much as possible! And yeah I'm excited for the meetup Thursday, I think it'll be fun (:

@amvanaken as you know from our conversation at the Colorado Springs meetup, I use Shift. While Coinbase is not universally liked, I have to say I have had zero problems with it, and I'm actully a very staunch advocate for it over Bitpay. I

think one of the best features is you do not have to translate any BTC to fiat before using it. BTC remains in your wallet, and Coinbase settles all transactions in your wallet in Bitcoin with no additional fees. That was one of the biggest reasons I went with Shift. Any contested charges have been resolved within 2 days, and the BTC was returned to my account.

Just drop me a line if you want some more details, but I say go with Shift. Best choice I made when I went unbanked for a bit.

I really need to make the switch! Do you recall if they have a fee for ordering the card?
Also, very excited for the meetup this Thursday, my roommate Zoe and I will be there (:

There was s a one time fee of $10 USD (payable in Bitcoin) to get the card.

Looking forward to catching up at the Meetup. Take care and talk to you then.
