Digital asset banknote manufacturer Tangem announced the launch of smart bitcoin banknotes in Singapore last week
This is a critical step towards mass adoption of Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies.
The Bitcoin banknotes are simple and easy for anyone to understand and can be exchanged just like fiat cash. The notes link via NFC to smartphones when necessary to send the Bitcoin online.
Governments around the world are declaring war on cash, trying to take away the basic human right to make anonymous transactions that people have enjoyed for thousands of years.
But while they can engage in this draconian behaviour with their own fiat money, they can't control Bitcoin.
Indeed the more they try to squeeze and control the people, the more they will drive people to cryptocurrencies, including bitcoin banknotes (not to be confused with Bitcoin Cash).
Freedom is at hand!
This is an interesting idea, but their explanation of the value add of these banknotes is lacking. Like, are these banknotes supposed to be the cash and the wallet addresses supposed to be the "bank account"? Or, is it just a way to get more people who have no interested in learning how to use a wallet to adopt Bitcoin?
We just don't see that the value proposition adds up completely. We're not saying there isn't value, but whatever it is it's just not laid out in a good way.

I think that the way it works is that the note contains the private key for a bitcoin wallet which contains the amount of bitcoin shown on the note's face value. By touching the bitcoin banknote to an NFC phone it will confirm that the funds are still in the wallet.
Thus they can be exchanged like cash, transferring control of the private keys (wallet), instead sending a transaction from one set of private keys (wallet) to another which is the normal method of exchanging cryptocurrency.

This is very interesting and is the first application that I know of that makes the private key concept accessible.
"By touching the bitcoin banknote to an NFC phone it will confirm that the funds are still in the wallet." That, however, is much more difficult than using cash. I can't imagine having to verify legitimacy of a paper bill like that every time I receive one.
Also, if the private key is stored on the bitcoin banknote, what prevents a previous owner from copying the key and then re-using it later (days, weeks, months)?

You make good points.
It is a bit of a pain having to verify each note is still good, although arguably one should do this with fiat to avoid forgeries.
I don't know how or if this system can prevent the private key being copied when it is obviously needed to spend the bitcoin in the note in the online on-chain world.
It may be possible to create a situation where the private key is locked into the note and is only accessible by the NFC enabled phone app that allows it to be spent on-chain.

I like your thoughts, I'm not sure it will work out this way though. I think the governments have a little more control than you think... Sadly for sure.

People want the simplicity and anonymity that goes with cash. It allows Bitcoin to perform the function that fiat money cash previously only could do.
