Crypto for the Average: Crypto and taxes

in bitcoin •  7 years ago

Briefly:

I had both-- Coinbase and GDAX accounts. I was politely kicked off for violating their rules. No --they were not specific. I assume it was either because--- a) I was funnelling money multiple times, daily, from profit from Bitconnect, or b) they didn't like that I sent funds to Novaexchange (wanted No Limit coin) --though I am not sure how they could have know where the BTC was sent.

So--now I have a Gemini account. I am much more careful. Here's what I do:

  • profits made on Bittrex or Nova....are NOT sent to Gemini so that I can exchange for US dollars. No No no....
  • BTC earned on Bitconnect are only sent to Bittrex.
  • When I think the market is going to go down,.... I buy physical silver. It's easy. Get's my earnings off the table, and more importantly---- Uncle Sam can't trace it, as long as I don't buy or sell more than 10k in one day. So---when I sold the other day when BTC hit 4900,...I actually bought silver. I just picked up my silver at the post office today. Schweeet!

I know what you're thinking, ' BTC is going back up...you even said so yourself'
1) I locked in my earnings. If silver goes down, hell...who cares, ...at least I don't have the pay 25-30% in taxes
2) I bought BTC (the same amount I sold, and soon more) using my Gemini account

I essentially have a revolving system. Yes, I have to go to the trouble of selling the silver if I want cash again. But, I think silver will be headed upward, so I'm waiting. Hopefully the folks at Gemini won't cancel my account as well. It's essentially my way of getting back in, and my way of funnelling BTC to Bittrex. I don't like having all of my money locked up in crypto. I like taking profits, and I like either holding it (silver) or seeing it (digitally) in my checking account. If you are the same way, ....uhmm...maybe consider my approach. But...be careful using Coinbase. They were polite and I received all of my coins and $,...but ...I'm kicked off.

Good luck

What sites do you use to purchase PMs with BTC?

I'm no authority on which is best, but JM Bullion gives you a 3% discount when using BTC. Shipping is free with orders over 100. Also, they are friendly and fast and you get quick notification when your metals get shipped. And....the calculator is easy....just remember to add in the small # for the transaction fee from the exchange. I screwed up the first time and lost $3 because I had to make 2 transactions. Ooops. No biggee.

I am no authority on this either. But, here are the ones I've used in the past with no problems.

Thanks for the post.

Oh, ok. Thanks. Yeah, I'll definitely keep that in mind. I don't buy fancy coins/mints. Just straight up standard .999 bars. You're welcome. Good luck.
