So, long story short, my brother in law is giving me some free bitcoin he bought a while back. I'm a novice at this, and I've got about 1 bitcoin myself. Given the recent bloodbath of the market and the upcoming fork talks, where would you suggest stashing the coins? Hold? Cash out and prepare to rebuy? Alt coins? I'm just wary since I've been given a pretty cool opportunity to play the market with no real risk to my own funds.

I would cash it out or put it in something safe like Ltc.

I would send it over to an exchange like Bittrex.com and make a few trades and see what you can do. Don't put it all in one coin but Ethereum would be a good buy even at it's current price. You can always send it back to Bitcoin after the whole segregated witness war dies down.
