Stripe, the mobile payment processor with a $9 bln valuation, has announced that it is officially winding down its Bitcoin integration. Over the next three months, Stripe customers will be encouraged to migrate away from Bitcoin payments. After that, Bitcoin will no longer be accepted at all.Read more: https://cointelegraph.com/news/payment-processor-stripe-ends-support-for-bitcoin-hypes-altcoinsStripe made waves in 2015 when it fully integrated Bitcoin, allowing all vendors who use the platform to accept Bitcoin payments. Many saw this as a sign of impending mainstream acceptance of Bitcoin as a payment method, but high fees and slow transaction confirmations have hobbled the network.
Disappointment
In a blog post, Stripe noted the high hopes the company had for Bitcoin when it first integrated the currency into its platform:“Our hope was that Bitcoin could become a universal, decentralized substrate for online transactions and help our customers enable buyers in places that had less credit card penetration or use cases where credit card fees were prohibitive.”
Stripe cites slow confirmation times and high fees as the reason for its abandonment of Bitcoin as a payment method:
Yikes, another big hit against Bitcoin and right in the kisser. If this trend continues and more and more retailers and fiat gateway products drop Bitcoin it can really hurt the network effect. The good news is for altcoins though. The need for blockchain based decentralized money is still there but who will best fill the void? Ethereum the next largest market cap coin is dealing with it's own high transfer fees and scaling issues so who will be the dark horse that take the crown?

2018 will be the year we see altcoins overtake Bitcoin. I think most of the value Bitcoin still has is just name recognition among lay-people, but I think that's all going to change in 2018. Newer blockchains with low/zero transaction fees and shorter block times are going to dominate.

I don’t think there will be another dark horse. I think it’s just another bump to slow it down. There is a reason BTC and ETH is priced so high. They just have to solve the issue with high transaction fees and time of transaction. The fixes are already in progress on coinbase exchange. Other will follow.

Bitcoin has a huge scalabilty issue and this is no secret. Other coins are faster and working towards fixes some of the problems like Cardano for example.

While there are some tokens working on solving the scaling issues for both BTC and Ethereum, NEO has already solved this dilemma. Proof of stake is the way to go, way faster and more efficient than proof of work.
