Buying Bitcoin in Australia can be a little frustrating. We lack access to the high volume exchanges overseas that only accept USD and other foreign currencies.
I attempted to send funds to Kraken and BTC-e earlier this year. Thankfully I did not succeed with BTC-e considering they have now been shut down by the FBI/CIA for money laundering!
I attempted to send USD from Australia via a number of forex companies and all of them rejected the transaction. They claim that BTC is often used for money laundering so block any transactions of fiat leaving Australia!
What a load of bollocks I say! So where does that leave us?
The main BTC exchanges in Australia are BTCMarkets and CoinJar. Both have prices that are noticably higher than that of the main international exchanges like Kraken.
From my experience, if you use BTCMarkets or CoinJar, both are reputable. THere is also CoinTree I believe however I have not used this one before.
