The Best And The Worst Cryptos This Year

So far, this year was a disaster in cryptocurrtency markets, but not all coins have performed equally. Many times, if Bitcoin falls, most altcoins (bitcoin alternatives) are underperforming (falling more), and if the big brother surges, the others are skyrocketing even more (outperforming). What happened in the first semester of 2018?

Ether better

I found a nice table on the page of Stooq.com (a polish brokerage firm), showing the performance of 99 cryptos, I suppose the 99 with the largest market capitalization. A half of a year, in the life of this coins seems to be an eternity. Some of them lost more than 80 or 90 percent of their price, many of them, almost the half, more than 75 percent.

As the huge table at the end of my post shows us, Bitcoin located on place 27 outperformed many of the altcoins, but still suffers a great loss of 59 percent in six months. (Prices as of June 29th; so, the price recovery of the last couple of days is not included in the data.) Ether, place 16, even better, but still loosing 44 percent in H1.

Only five winners

Only 5 coins could win, Binance Coin, Aeternity, Ontology, Vechain and Tron. (Tether is nearing the red line, but is a stablecoin pegged to the USD, in theory.) Steem with a fall of 63 percent, on place 33, was better than the average (better, the median) of the coins. After the EOS-hype, EOS was in negative the 29th of June, but today it was skyrocketing, +9 percent.

Some words about the winners

I was wondering what makes this five cryptos special, or what is their purpose. So I made a little more research, mostly with the help of Bitcoinwiki.

Binance Coin (BNB)

is an ERC20 token issued on the Ethereum blockchain by the popular cryptocurrency exchange Binance. With this you can pay a сommission for transactions on the exchange. And if you decide to do so, you will receive additional discounts.

Aeternity (AE)

a scalable blockchain platform that enables high bandwidth transacting, purely-functional smart contracts, and decentralized oracles. (Bitcoinwiki.) Oracles are tools that allow blockchains to learn the outcome of an event. As such they make statements about something that happened in the past. They are a link between the physical universe and the virtual reality of blockchain platforms.

Ontology (ONT)

Look, a newcomer:

Ontology provides public blockchains that include a series of complete distributed ledgers and smart contract systems. The ONT token was distributed in airdrop in early 2018. The initial price of the token on March 8th was 2.62 USD.

Vechain (VEN)

Vechain is a blockchain platform and cryptocurrency that is targeting the Internet of Things. VeChain allows manufacturers to assign products with RFID (radio-frequency identification) identifiers which record information across the supply chain. (Bitcoinwiki.)
VET was the first cryptocurrency to create a disaster recovery plan and the first one to partner with the Chinese government. (Wikipedia)

Tron (TRX)

Steem-competitor?

a blockchain-based, decentralized protocol project that aims to be a content distribution platform for the digital entertainment industry. (…) creators have the power to freely publish, store, and own their content, interacting directly with consumers thanks to the decentralized issuance, circulation, and trading of digital assets (…) make entertainment content both easier to sell and cheaper to consume. In theory this goal is achieved by putting the content on a blockchain and the creators and consumers in a network of peers, eliminating the middleman.

So far, so good. I can’t see any special feature of this cryptocurrencies, they are quite different. I see newcomer and old ones, specialized one and more general ones.

But some of them are related to “the physical universe”, or real goods commerce. Is it possible that coins with a purpose in everyday life, those which aren’t only suitable for crypto-enthusiasts, have more future than others? It is only an idea, may be intuition, but I ‘ll try to investigate more physical world use cases.
