I think you need to consider the wide mass adoption to be, plus actually even gold it's worthless, its value is the one given by consensus and adoption.
Not that the actual monetary system is flawless, where banks can create money from stardust..don't you think? ;-)

I think that Bitcoin is much better than gold in terms it is easy to store, carry and save. You don't need brokers or fancy storage to guard your gold. BTC is better for digital age. That said I also think BTC is going to scale in the future and add a new layer of anonymity. We need just patience and some good developers.
