Power Ledger is a decentralized, trustless energy trading platform. If you’re not familiar with this project you can check out my previous articles here, here, and here.
Today we’ll take a look at what’s been going on recently with Power Ledger.
The biggest news is that Power Ledger signed an agreement with BCPG, a private power company located in Thailand. It’s focused on renewable energies including solar, biomass, wind, hydro, and geothermal energy. Right now it has 182 MW of solar capacity in Thailand and another 236 MW of solar capacity in Japan.
The first project between Power Ledger and BCPG is going to be a microgrid development in Bangkok. It will involve 6-10 multi-story apartment buildings which have 1-2 MW of embedded solar generation. Power Ledger will provide the peer-to-peer energy trading platform. Per the company it’s the first project of this kind in SE Asia.
More news came out recently that BCPG also signed a memorandum of understanding with the Thai government, specifically the Industrial Estate Authority of Thailand. They’re build a Smart Park which will have 100 MW of distributed solar power and 30-40 MWh of battery storage. Once again Power Ledger was chosen to provide provide the peer-to-peer energy trading platform.
In other news, Power Ledger was named as one of the three finalists in the 2018 Extreme Tech Challenge. This is the challenge sponsored by Sir Richard Branson. It’s the world’s largest startup competition. And the winner will get appear on Branson’s Necker Island later this year. Good luck Power Ledger!
Finally, Power Ledger partnered with US-based clean energy non-profit Helpanswers. I had never heard of Helpanswers before, but it’s run by Mark Johnson who used to has extensive energy experience, including the US Department of Energy, Schneider Electric and IBM. Power Ledger and Helpanswers are working on several potential projects.
I like Power Ledger, this is one I’m holding for the long-term.
